Coconino County will host two free Drop Off Day events in June.
The first will be in the Forest Lakes Community on Friday, June 14thfrom 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1538 Merzville Rd. Forest Lakes Estate, and the second will be the following day on Saturday, June 15th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Munds Park at 17768 Fairway Dr. Munds Park.
The Munds Park Drop Off Event is facilitated both by Coconino County and the City of Sedona. This is the first time the County has hosted these collection events, and it provides an opportunity for residents to dispose of “hard to recycle” and “hazardous waste” such as electronics, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, medical waste, and sensitive documents. The Drop Off Days are hosted in conjunction with the “Community Clean Up Days”, where unincorporated Coconino County residents are mailed a voucher that allows them to bring bulk items to the Cinder Lake Landfill. The intent is to encourage residents to bring certain items to the Drop Off Day that would otherwise be landfilled.
Disposing of electronics and batteries in landfills contaminates drinking water and can kill wildlife. Electronics in landfills will also release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Throwing out electronics wastes billions of dollars in recoverable materials such as gold, silver, coltan, copper, palladium, platinum, and other valuable metals. Paper documents can be recycled into new products, reducing the need to cut down forests for paper production. Proper disposal is important for protecting the health of humans and our environment.
