Coconino County Seeks Applicants for Commission on Trial Court Appointments

For more than 40 years Arizona citizens have benefited from a judicial merit selection and retention system. Merit selection is a way of choosing judges that uses nonpartisan commissions to investigate and evaluate applicants for judgeships. The commissions then submit the names of at least three highly qualified applicants to the Governor. The Governor appoints appellate court judges statewide and trial court judges in Coconino, Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties from lists of nominees submitted by the judicial nominating commissions.

Applicants are sought for two non-attorney positions. In accordance with the Arizona Constitution, Article VI, Section 41, requirements for non-attorney members are:

• Applicant must have resided in the State for at least five years.
• Applicant must have resided in the supervisorial district from which appointed for at least one year before being nominated (To determine your current Supervisorial District, call 928-679-7162 or visit the County GIS Website)
• The applicant cannot be a judge, a retired judge or a lawyer admitted to practice before the Supreme Court.
• The applicant cannot hold any governmental office, elective or appointive, for profit (i.e., salary, commission, etc.) An appointee can be a governmental employee.

Applications along with the Committee’s recommendation for appointment will be forwarded to the Governor who shall make appointments subject to confirmation of the Arizona Senate.
