Well Wishes to Kevin Von Horn

Kevin Van Horn, Parks Facilities Supervisor, has accepted a position at Public Works as the Solid Waste Manager. Kevin has been with Coconino County Parks and Recreation since 2000, primarily working as the Operations & Maintenance Facilities Trades Supervisor. Kevin’s work has been invaluable throughout his time with Parks and Recreation, working on projects such as installing electricity to the stables, maintaining the roadways of Fort Tuthill County Park, and setting up successful Fairs. His knowledge of electricity and plumbing, especially regarding a historic site, has been greatly impactful. Coconino County Parks and Recreation wishes Kevin Van Horn all the best in his new position and extends gratitude for his years of service.

Water Sustainability Progress at the Pepsi Amphitheater

Operations and Maintenance have top-dressed the lawn at the Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill County Park. By increasing the soil depth, the lawn will require less water use. This allows continued enjoyment of the lawn with less environmental impact. Reducing water use to maintain the Pepsi Amphitheater lawn is one of the goals identified in the Fort Tuthill County Park Sustainable Water Management Plan.

Trailhead Construction at Fort Tuthill

Coconino County Parks and Recreation has begun work on a main trailhead at the Fort Tuthill County Park. The new trailhead will be located near the restroom and bike park. This main trailhead will facilitate greater trail connections, to provide continuous recreation opportunities for the community and visitors. Coconino County Parks and Recreation will be fabricating a kiosk in house, providing picnic tables, and adding a bike workstation at the trailhead. Parks and Recreation are thankful for funding from Supervisor Ryan (District 3), who has supported the project.

Sewer Construction at Fort Tuthill

Work on the ARPA-funded sewer line kicked off last month. County Parks & Recreation staff, contractor Kinney Construction Services, and City of Flagstaff staff met at the park for a pre-construction meeting to discuss the construction process, City standards for a sewer line, and project timeline. Project construction began October 14, with trenching beginning at the southeast end of the sewer line. Staff is doing a walk through in the campground this month to do a realignment in that section, to minimize the number of trees that will need to be felled. This project is funded in part from an ARPA grant administered by the Arizona State Parks Board and will provide greater outdoor recreation opportunities to park visitors by installing a sewer line to aid future campground improvements, and improve two parking lot surfaces in the park.

Friends of Coconino County Parks Holds First Disc Golf Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who supported the Friends of Coconino County Parks Disc Golf Tournament Fundraiser! The non-profit Friends of Coconino County Parks (FCCP) hosted their first disc golf tournament fundraiser on Sept. 24 at the Fort Tuthill Disc Golf Course. Over 100 participants enjoyed a blue-sky day and balmy weather and competed for cash prizes. The non-profit group supports Coconino County Parks & Recreation with efforts in land conservation, park development, volunteerism, and recreational activities.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help support efforts to bolster parks and recreation amenities across the county. This past year, FCCP sponsored the City of Flagstaff’s Concert in the Park series and helped bring the concert to Peaks View County Park. FCCP also sponsored award prizes for the Coconino County Fair entries, with cash prizes for Best in Show awards in Agriculture and Horticulture, Fine Arts, Floriculture, Gems & Minerals, Home Economics, Hobbies & Collectables, Open Horse, Open Poultry, Open Rabbit and Cavy, Open Youth, and Schools.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without event sponsors, including title sponsor Findlay Toyota Flagstaff, and additional sponsors: Stackhouse Wealth Strategies LLC, Swire Coca-Cola, Great Circle Media, Thought Space Athletics, The Disc Shack, Continental Country Club, Diamond Auto Glass and Tint, 108 Excavating LLC, SR Overton Construction, Flagstaff Pro Rodeo, Satchmo’s BBQ, Oh Doggy Hot Dogs Flagstaff, REI Co Op Flagstaff, Aloft Disc Golf, Jester SxS, and R Entertainment and Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill County Park. Be on the lookout for another fundraiser next year!
