A quick word from the President—
|
Here at Coconino Community College, we have celebrated our 512 recent graduates with a Commencement Ceremony held virtually in order to keep everybody healthy and safe during the pandemic. It is our hope of hopes that vaccinations are doing their job, and we can all, once again, celebrate our graduates’ achievements in person next year.
As the vaccination effort progresses, and as numbers of COVID-19 infections decline, CCC has begun the process, with health and safety of our students, faculty and staff as priority, of scheduling more in-person course offerings this summer. This fall, if all trends continue, CCC will welcome back students with an increase of in-person courses to help our students find instructional delivery that fits their needs as they get busy recovering from the effects of this global pandemic.
To help students afford their new educational goals, CCC is excited to offer graduating high school seniors in Coconino County, with the help of federal COVID relief funds, free tuition for summer courses so they can get a jump on their fall semester. All other qualifying students will receive reduced rates on their tuition this summer and fall with the help of these funds. Recently, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced more than $7 million in funding for community college scholarships for currently unemployed workers who are eligible for “Return-to-Work” funding. The governor is also making an additional $6 million available for workers who don’t have high school diplomas to prepare for and take General Education Development (GED) tests.
Finally, CCC now has a coach to head the cross country running program, which was announced in February last year. The pandemic put the program on hold, but now we are moving forward with Coach Craig Hunt to field a team. The program, which is fully supported by outside donations, can always use help. See the related story below for more details.
As always, I wish everybody a safe and healthy summer, and if you’re looking to start that next chapter of your life as the pandemic starts to fade, I believe CCC can help. It’s not too late to register for summer classes, which begin June 7, and registration for fall classes has already begun as well. Give us a visit at www.coconino.edu to learn more.
Onward! Náás! Adelante!

Coach Craig Hunt ready to hit ground running
|
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coconino Community College has hired Flagstaff resident Craig Hunt to be the first coach for the college’s cross country running program, which is slated to begin its first season this fall.
“I’d like to thank Tony Williams and everyone who has helped create the cross country programs at CCC,” Hunt said. “This is an exciting time for CCC and the Flagstaff community, and I am thrilled to lead the way as the inaugural cross country coach.”
Hunt also said that he shares a vision with CCC to build the program into a future national contender, and he plans to be an instrumental part in that vision.
“When we started this process, I really wanted to find a coach who not only wanted the challenge of starting a cross country program from scratch, but who also had a vision of it becoming an all-academic program as well,” said Tony Williams, CCC’s Dean of Student Affairs and Athletic Director. “Coach Hunt’s vision is to cultivate a team-oriented learning environment for our student athletes that will inspire them to grow as leaders in the classroom, in the community and in competition.”

Academy made possible in partnership between CCC and Sheriff’s Office

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Ten new detention officers will be working for the Sheriff’s Office after having graduated from Basic Detention Academy. They were honored with a ceremony on May 14 at the Pepsi Amphitheater at the Fort Tuthill County Fairgrounds.
The academy is made possible through a partnership with the sheriff’s office and Coconino Community College.
“Partnerships are essential to the success of many programs here at CCC, and one highly successful partnership is one that was established 14 years ago and has produced 27 Detention Academies,” said David Ramos, CCC Administration of Justice faculty. “CCC and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office partnered to create a higher level of academic training for the detention staff who are employed at our jail in Flagstaff and Page.”

CCC student Cascade Parcell works toward getting skills for municipal fire department
|
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – CCC student Cascade Parcell was one of a handful of students taking the Wildland Fire Chainsaws course in April at Coconino Community College. The course is part of a CCC Wildland Fire Suppression Certificate program.
“The certificate is designed to assist people interested in wildland firefighting to obtain employment in that field,” said Marc Goldberg, CCC’s Fire Science Coordinator. “The curriculum provides basic entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities to function as a wildland firefighter.”
“I need credits for my Fire Science degree, and I wanted a refresher with saws,” Parcell said, smiling. “This is a good every-day skill, too, because I have to get firewood.”
Parcell spent four years as a wildland firefighter, but now she wants to move on and get hired by a municipal fire department. She already has a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician. She currently works as an EMT for Guardian Medical Transport in Flagstaff.

Flagstaff resident Travis Barnes wants to travel away from home to study Economics
|
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Travis Barnes has experienced a number of hardships and false starts in his life.
“My parents gave me ‘the talk,” Barnes said, smiling. “They said, ‘School is the best investment you can make in yourself.’”
So, Barnes, a Flagstaff local who graduated from Sinagua High School when it was still a high school, decided to consider a career and opted for Coconino Community College.
Now, having graduated in May from CCC with a certificate in Arizona General Education Curriculum – Arts, Barnes will now be attending Arizona State University in the fall to study Economics. While at CCC, he enrolled in the MyPath2ASU university transfer program, one of several transfer programs at CCC.
Sonjia Jones, Academic and Career Advisor at CCC, said that the college has partnerships with ASU, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona and Grand Canyon University.
“Overall, Arizona wants to see its population become more skilled and educated,” Jones said. “Increasing access to higher education is good for the state, the economy, families and communities.”
