FLAGSTAFF — City of Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway has been selected as the “Mary Jo Jenkins Outstanding Director of the Year.”
Treadway has provided exemplary leadership this year as he tackled numerous high profile and challenging law enforcement and community issues, city officials reported in a media release.
Each year, the City Manager and Deputy City Manager’s recognize a Director with the award. Mary Jo Jenkins was a long time Management Services Director who passed away in 2009 from cancer. She was a tremendous asset to the organization and the community. The purpose of this award is to recognize someone who captures that spirit and dedication.
The City Manager’s team cited numerous examples of Treadway’ s efforts in 2014:
- Successfully navigating the SB1070 policy change.
- High quality police work that resulted in the apprehension of the armed robbers of a jewelry store as well as the capture and successful prosecution of a serial rapist.
- Efforts to improve the aggressive and prevalent panhandling issues facing Flagstaff in a compassionate and constitutional manner.
- Chief Treadway’s work to curb domestic violence. He introduced a new lethality assessment tool into the department in order to determine how safe or volatile a situation is or will be once law enforcement leaves the scene. This tool also provides better documentation to improve the ability to gain convictions. He further instituted changes to the process for serving Orders of Protection that have eliminated 90% of the backlog. Treadway has worked in partnership with other organizations in the community that have a similar mission. This work earned him recognition by End Violence Against Women International. In their newsletter they featured an article entitled “Shining the Spotlight on Flagstaff Police Department Transparency and Community Collaboration.” This profile lauded the department’s leadership in reaching out to enlist the help of all concerned citizens to end violence against women and make Flagstaff a safe place to live.
For these accomplishments and many more, Chief Kevin Treadway is recognized as the 2014 Mary Jo Jenkin’s Outstanding Director of the Year.
