City of Flagstaff seeks community feedback for Milton Underpass Design Elements

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff seeks community feedback for the direction of Milton Underpass aesthetics. Planned public artwork will enhance a vital gateway into downtown through creative, community-informed design. The project will elevate the distinct character of Flagstaff by incorporating input from the people who live, work and travel through the area.

“We’re excited to hear from the community,” said Jana Weldon, Beautification, Arts & Sciences program manager. “This is an opportunity to help create something lasting and meaningful in a space many of us pass through every day. Public input is essential to this process.”

Through and online survey, residents are invited to voice their opinions on two central themes: “Sound & Motion” and “Stories of Flagstaff.” These themes, both of which highlight the energy of the corridor and Flagstaff’s cultural landscape, were developed through earlier focus group discussions. Participants will evaluate how well each theme connects to Flagstaff, Milton Road and whether themes will welcome and intrigue visitors. They will also be asked to provide feedback on potential project materials and design ideas, including concrete form liners, perforated steel, photographic imagery and geological topography. The information gathered will guide the final design.

“Whether you walk, bike, drive, live, or work near Milton Road, your voice maters,” said Weldon. “The goal is to make the underpass not just a functional part of the city, but a welcoming and reflective space for all.”

The Milton Underpass is part of the Downtown Mile Project, a comprehensive effort to improve public safety, multimodal transportation and rail infrastructure in Flagstaff’s downtown corridor.
