City of Flagstaff conducting inventory of water service lines; Customers with service lines with unknown material to receive notice

FLAGSTAFF — Per Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) requirements, the City has been conducting an inventory of the location and material type of all city water service lines. City customers with service lines of unknown material will receive a notice from the City of Flagstaff in early November 2024. There is a possibility that water service lines of unknown material could be made of lead or galvanized pipe that was previously connected to lead.

Notices provided to customers with water service lines of unknown material will include steps to take to help determine the material in the water service line.

The Water Services Division has been working since January 2023 to inventory water service lines in the City of Flagstaff. As of September 2024, 60 percent of all Flagstaff water service lines have been fully identified and none have been found to contain lead. The City is required to replace all galvanized service lines within the 10-year deadline outlined by the EPA. A forthcoming replacement plan will detail how the City plans to address and replace any service lines in noncompliance of EPA regulations.

Further information on water quality in Flagstaff can be found in the most recent Flagstaff Consumer Confidence Report. Data recorded for this report and every 3 years since the 1990s indicates that Flagstaff’s water systems remain under lead action levels according to EPA regulations.
