FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff invites artists to submit Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) to work within a design team to create a landmark three-dimensional artwork on a promontory at East Cedar Avenue and North West Street. The deadline to apply is March 25, 2025, at 3 p.m. (MT).
The artwork will be a visually striking and durable installation that enhances the cultural and aesthetic landscape of the neighborhood and Flagstaff. This public art installation, known as the Spruce Wash Wedge Artwork, is a part of the Spruce Wash Watershed Improvements flood mitigation project. The site-specific piece will integrate with a reconfigured promontory, which includes a new retaining wall and expanded sidewalk landing. It will serve as a distinctive icon, engaging community members and passersby.
“This is an exciting opportunity for an artist or artist team to design a striking sculpture for Flagstaff’s east side,” said Jana Weldon, Beautification, Arts & Sciences program manager. “The artist will join a design team with a supporting landscape architect to dynamically incorporate a three-dimensional artwork at Spruce Wash Wedge, add visual interest to the urban environment and contribute to the City’s ongoing commitment to community-centered public art.”
Interested artists must submit an SOQ demonstrating their applicable competence, qualifications and relevant experience with public art. The selected artist will receive a design services contract. Once the City approves the design and all necessary documents are completed, a second contract will be issued for fabrication and installation.
The artist will develop a site-specific design through community engagement, location research and artistic inspiration, and in collaboration with a City chosen landscape architect. The final artwork must be fabricated and installed within budget and meet key durability and safety standards, including resistance to environmental elements, minimal maintenance requirements and graffiti deterrence. Artists must register as a vendor on Planet Bids before submitting an SOQ.
