FLAGSTAFF — The National Park Service and Coconino Community College have partnered for a Volunteer Training Program at Grand Canyon National Park.
The program, which exposes volunteers to many aspects of the work by the National Park Service in the Grand Canyon, takes place over four weekends for a total of 50 hours on the following subjects and dates:
- Resource Management: Sept. 21-23
- Wildland Fire: Oct. 12-14
- Vegetation & Greenhouse: Nov. 16-18
- Resources, Greenhouses and Opportunities: Dec. 7-9
If students complete all four weekends, they will receive a volunteer certificate from the Park Service, and notice of completion of a non-credit class on their academic record from CCC.
“Through this experience, students at Coconino Community College will be exposed to different career opportunities within the National Park Service,” said Rachele Funk, Volunteer Coordinator for the Park Service. “Volunteering to explore these careers will give students a taste of what we do on a day-to-day basis.”
Funk added that using the volunteer hours, participants will have a personal connection with many departmental supervisors, allowing for the students to have name recognition and familiarity if and when they are interested in an internship or job opportunity.
Cost for the program is $20. Volunteers are responsible for transportation and food. Housing will be provided by the Park Service. Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
There will be a class informational meeting Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m., at the CCC Lone Tree campus, 2800 S. Lone Tree Road, in Flagstaff. People who are interested may register with Kay Leum, CCC’s Director of Special Projects and Grants, at Kay.Leum@coconino.edu, or 928-645-6682.
