FLAGSTAFF — Enrique Morones, founder and executive director of Border Angels, will present the discussion “Border Angels, Border Realities, and Immigration Today” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at Northern Arizona University, Liberal Arts, Room 120, Building No. 18.
Morones founded Border Angels, a non-profit organization that saves lives of people migrating through the Imperial Valley desert, the mountains surrounding San Diego County and elsewhere on the US/Mexico border in 1986.
He has served as vice president of the San Diego Padres, the President of the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Founder of the House of Mexico in San Diego’s Balboa Park. He has been named one of the 100 most influential Latinos in the United States by Latino Impact and Hispania Business Magazine.
During his time with the San Diego Padres, Morones worked to increase the Latino fan base by establishing the Department of Hispanic Marketing, the first of its kind in Major League Baseball. Over the next six years, he increased Latino attendance from 50,000 to 600,000 fans. On February 25, 1998 the city and county of San Diego declared the date Enrique Morones Day. In 2009, he was awarded Mexico’s National Human Rights Award by Mexico’s Human Rights Commission.
The presentation is open and free to the public. Sponsored by College of Arts and Letters, Comparative Cultural Studies, Honors College, Latin American Studies, NAU No More Deaths, The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and The Student Activities Council.
