Bilingual report — The 2021 Museum Flood Preparedness & Mitigation Guide is now Available in Spanish!

FLAGSTAFF — The 2021 Museum Flood Preparedness & Mitigation Guide is now available in Spanish on the Museum Flood area web page at www.coconino.az.gov/MuseumFire/FloodArea web page or directly via www.coconino.az.gov/GuiaDeInundaciones2021.

The Guide offers flood preparation guidelines and resources to help keep you and your family aware, informed, and safe during monsoon season. In addition, the Guide has information regarding emergency notification, sandbag maintenance preparation, what to do after a flood and flood preparation activities by the Coconino County Flood Control District and City of Flagstaff.

This Guide is essential reading for everyone who lives or owns property in the Museum Flood Area because the threat of flooding remains real, and because your property will remain at high risk for post-wildfire flooding for several years. Although we were fortunate not to have experienced any flooding during the past two summers, it is equally important to note that the National Weather Service classified the 2019 and 2020 monsoon seasons as two of the driest on record, and that post-wildfire sediment flows were still observed coming from the forest after a monsoon storm on July 24, 2020. In addition, the FCD recently validated the original model used to gauge flood risk in the Museum Flood Area and determined that the area remains at risk for hazardous flash flooding. This means that it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for flooding during what is forecast to be an active monsoon season.
