Embroidering Cross-Stitch Style
Throughout the centuries, the cultural deterioration of indigenous groups has been extensive; their knowledge has gradually been hidden under the unifying veil of the dominant cultures. It is also unquestionable that modernization has strongly influenced traditions since it is essential to increase production and reduce costs. However, as contexts and circumstances change, people’s actions and knowledge also change without necessarily implying a total breakdown of the cultural system that gives them strength.

A clear example of this adaptation is the embroidery that is produced today in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. Whether of counted cross-stitch or machine-made, this embroidery symbolizes an indigenous culture that is created and recreated every day. It collects the voices of artisans showing their experience in the trade and the identity that sustains it, obtained from their ancestors during different historical contexts. The human being cannot get rid of the inheritance of other times, nor of their personal, social, and community experiences. This aggregate of the collective past, individual experiences, and cultural creation – which is inseparable from the historical processes that shape it – continues to be the basis of their current identity.

A través de los siglos, el deterioro cultural de los grupos indígenas ha sido extenso; sus conocimientos poco a poco se han ido ocultando bajo el velo uniformador de las culturas dominantes. Es indudable además que la modernización ha influenciado fuertemente las tradiciones, ya que esta es imprescindible para aumentar la producción y reducir los costos. Sin embargo, en la medida en que cambian los contextos y las circunstancias, también cambian las acciones y los saberes de las personas sin que ello signifique necesariamente una ruptura total del sistema cultural que les da fuerza.

Un claro ejemplo de esta adaptación es el bordado que se produce hoy en día en el estado de Yucatán, México. Bien sea de hilo contado o hecho a máquina, este bordado simboliza una cultura indígena que se crea y recrea cada día. Recoge las voces de las artesanas mostrando su experiencia en el oficio y la identidad que la sustenta, obtenida de sus antepasados durante distintos contextos históricos. El ser humano no puede deshacerse de la herencia de otras épocas, como tampoco de sus experiencias personales, sociales, y comunitarias. Esta suma del pasado colectivo, las experiencias individuales y la creación cultural -que es inseparable  de los procesos históricos que la moldean- sigue siendo la base de su identidad actual.

As in past years, we are offering two versions of our exclusive calendars, each version showing 13+ images printed on high-quality cardstock: a 12-month, 8 ½”x11” wall calendar that will give you a quick-glance view of every month and room to write in appointments and notes, and a 5”x11” 12-month desk calendar with a handsome and durable built-in easel for display.

This year we will include in the packaging a miniature clay charm, made and painted by Maya artisans specifically for this project. This will make our calendars even more precious to you, your friends, and your family. Our classy calendars also make a very appropriate, one-of-a-kind corporate holiday gift.  They are assembled completely by hand, individually signed by GSP, finished, wrapped, and mailed directly from our studio. Therefore, they are not available through our website shopping cart. Each wall calendar costs US$35, and each desk calendar costs US$45 plus shipping and taxes.
