In the English language, the term Old Country is commonly used to refer to the European Continent. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, however, “old country” is a noun that refers to the country where a person was born or lived before moving to a new country. Hence, the Old Country is not the same for everyone because it depends on our individual ancestry, and it is normally used when we refer to family traditions or habits that came from our country of origin. In addition, Merriam-Webster gives us yet another definition of old: “dating from the remote past, persisting from an earlier time, of long standing, and of, relating to, or originating in a past era”, among others.

The two meanings of the term can be applied together, appropriately so, to almost every area of the world, especially when our ancestries originated there. As we journey through our regions, it is easy to perceive that a significant part of what gives the territory personality and a gist of community is its history; and one way of recognizing this history are its historic buildings and structures, which may be representative of a certain style of architecture, a meaningful era, or a landmark in the area’s history.

Historic buildings and districts -often made of unique, valuable materials such as heart pine, marble, or old brick- can be an emblem of a community’s inheritance, personality, and sense of place. They personify the lives of those who constructed, functioned, and dwelled in them. They tell chronicles about what a place was and link us to our past. On a more practical level, restoring and recycling historic properties encourage energy efficiency, support old techniques of artisanship, and attract investors as well as tourists if the structures are historically meaningful.

It is difficult to ascertain significance devoid of a historic context. To better understand ourselves we must be observant of those objects which surround us, in their corresponding time and place. This way, old buildings in the Old Country will give us an appropriate sense of where, why, we are who we are, and how in due course we came to be.
