FLAGSTAFF — Andy Bertelsen has accepted the position of Public Works Director and will begin working for the City of Flagstaff on March 28, 2016.
Bertelsen was selected following a two-day interview process with three other candidates earlier this month. In his announcement to the City Council and city employees, City Manager Josh Copley said that Bertelsen has proven he is an effective leader and a proficient manager. “Andy has a reputation of being a strong collaborator and team builder and I believe that he will add significant value to the exemplary leadership and supervisory team that currently exists within the Public Works Division,” Copley stated.
As the Coconino County Public Works Director for the past 8 years, Bertelsen helped the County coordinate its response to some extremely challenging events including the 2010 Shultz Fire and subsequent flooding. Previously Bertelsen served as Interim Assistant County Manager and as its Planning and Budget Manager. He also served as the Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Sedona.
Bertelsen received his Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration & Political Science from Augustana College and his Master’s degree in Urban & Regional Planning from the University of Iowa. Additionally, Andy is a graduate of the Harvard Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program and earned a Graduate Certificate in Public Management from Northern Arizona University. Bertelsen also demonstrates a commitment to the community through service and volunteerism. Along with his other efforts in this regard he is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors for United Way of Northern Arizona.
Bertelsen is taking over responsibility as Public Works Director from Erik Solberg who retired earlier this month after a 36 year career at the City of Flagstaff.
