Effective April 8, 2020, park spaces and amenities at City parks will be closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city recognizes the importance of these outdoor amenities; however, the safety of the public, staff and the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 are the highest priority.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Monthand this is top of mind for me as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic and the looming economic recession that will likely follow. The stress today on our families is unprecedented and my fear is that some children may bear the brunt of that reality.
The Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth recently published their Prevention Plan & Needs Assessment. In the report, Virginia Watahomigie CCC&Y Executive Director says, “We can no longer say-this is not my problem. The effects of childhood trauma have tremendous costs to society, and it is imperative that we develop the understanding of why and what can be done.”
Coconino County is here to support our community during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The County has several resources for our community to use during this time.
You can visit our website by clicking here to see all the resources we are providing through Coconino County.
Below are some resources offered through the County as well as our community partners.
Coconino County will reopen the Willard Springs Transfer Station for the summer season for free green waste-only disposal.
The station will not be accepting bulk waste due to cash handling and social distancing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Green waste disposal provides an incentive for residents to clean up their properties before wildfire season.
Did you know that Coconino County is going live every day at 2:00 pm on Facebook to keep you informed about what the County is doing during this time?
Make sure to tune in at 2:00 pm each day to get an update from the County about COVID-19. All past updates are archived on the County’s Facebook page.

Fill out the 2020 Census!
What is the 2020 Census and Why is it Important?
The census aims to collect an accurate count of our population which determines federal funding for our communities for resources like schools, hospitals, fire departments, roads, etc. The census also helps determine federal funding in times of disaster like the COVID-19 pandemic or forest fires, as well as determines the amount of seats Arizona will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Upon receiving the above request from Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS), acting Superintendent Mary Risser, with the support of the NPS Deputy Director, Operations, David Vela and Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, made the decision to immediately close the park until further notice.
The Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth (CCC&Y) strives to prevent substance abuse and other negative outcomes in adulthood by understanding the effects of childhood traumatic experience and mobilizing community action. Research shows that Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, contribute to the likelihood of addiction. Sadly, however, Arizona ranks higher than the national average for children who have experienced ACEs. These can include childhood traumas such as abuse and neglect. In fact, according to the Arizona ACE Consortium, “It is estimated that nearly 70,000 children in Arizona have more than five ACEs.”
