Arizona approved to build Veteran Home in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) State Home Construction Grant Program has approved funding for the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services to build a new Arizona State Veteran Home in Flagstaff.

The Flagstaff facility will contain 80 beds and be built on eight acres of land on McMillan Mesa that was provided by the Flagstaff City Council in 2015 for this effort. The home will serve veterans and their families throughout northern Arizona. As there is currently is no state-run facility north of Phoenix, this home will allow veterans in need of specialized care to remain in the region.

“This project shows our gratitude to veterans throughout northern Arizona and we are incredibly excited that it made the VA’s construction grant priority list this year,” said Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans. “We are grateful to Governor Ducey and the state of Arizona for setting aside the necessary matching funds and to Senators McCain and Flake and Congressman O’Halleran for advocating on our behalf.”

The existing state Veteran Homes are in Tucson and Phoenix. The VA also approved a proposed home in Yuma.

“This facility will also serve the Native American veteran community in northern Arizona who have answered the call to military service at a higher rate than any other segment of our population,” said Councilmember Charlie Odegaard. “We are so appreciative of all the effort that made this proposal a funded project.”
