Activities expand to entire month of April at the university

During an interview last year, Robert Neustadt said it would be up to the students to decide if they want to carry on “Immigration Awareness Week” at Northern Arizona University in future years.
“It depends on the students. I won’t say this will be the first of an annual Immigration Awareness Week at NAU, but I wouldn’t be surprised,” Neustadt, professor of Spanish and director of Latin American Studies at NAU, was quoted last year.
Well, apparently the students were so energized by the response to last year’s initial effort that the program has expanded to the entire month of April.
“Originally, we thought if we took a week of events and spread them over the whole month it would be less intense,” Neustadt said recently. However, as more events continued to be added, “It’s now four intense weeks. We got a lot of stuff. I guess we’re gluttons for punishment but there is not another university in the world that’s putting on such an intense border immigration awareness program. We’re very proud of it.”
With the help of program assistant Emily O’Neil, members of the NAU Chapter of No More Deaths / No Mas Muertes, last-minute planning for the program is coming together, Neustadt said.
“It is definitely student driven,” he said. “Students who have been on my border trips want to come back and share what they have learned,” he said. “It’s so secretive and if you don’t look for it, it doesn’t come back to you. The students are very driven to raise awareness on campus.”

• Immigration Awareness Month opens on Tuesday, April 1 with the return of West Cosgrove of the Kino Border Initiative. Cosgrove will explain the reasons and conditions for undocumented immigration and will also talk about the humanitarian efforts of the Kino Border Initiative during the presentation “Putting the Border in Context” at 7 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 120.
• Robin Reineke, executive director of the Colibrí Center for Human Rights, will present “Decomposition as Corporeal Politics: Postmortem Violence on the US-Mexico Border” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2 in Liberal Arts 120.
• Immigration Awareness Month will also include the previously announced “Globalization and Migration: NAU International Film Series Spring 2014” with the showing of “Who is Dayani Cristal?” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2 in Liberal Arts 120.
“That film got a lot of national attention,” Neustadt said of the documentary that follows the staff of the Pima County Morgue on a forensic investigation to uncover the identity of a migrant who died in the “corridor of death” along the Arizona-Mexico border. “I find that to be an incredibly compelling service.”
• The screening of “The Immigration Paradox” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3 in Liberal Arts 120. The directors, Lourdes and Bryan Vasquez, will attend the screening for a question and answer session.
• Immigration Awareness Month — Week two will open with “Humanitarian Activism on the Border,” featuring a discussion by John Fife on “Getting in the Way: Resistance Movements to Death on the Border,” presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 in Liberal Arts 120.
“I see him as a contemporary of César Chávez and Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Neustadt said of Fife, who founded the Sanctuary Movement in the early 1980s to provide safe-haven in more than 600 churches in the United States to Central American refugees fleeing civil war in their countries. “He was facing nine years of prison and still refused to back down.”
• The screening of “The Undocumented” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 in Liberal Arts 120.
• The screening of “Need to Know: Crossing the Line” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10 in Liberal Arts 120.
• “The Humanitarian Crisis on the Border” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 in the Cline Auditorium.
• Immigration Awareness Month — Week three: “Environmental Consequences of Border Security,” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at noon Monday, April 14 at HLC 2403. The program will feature the NAU student panel: “Experiences on the Border.” NAU students who have been to and conducted research on the border will present their findings.
• A lecture by Dan Millis, director of the Sierra Club Borderlands Campaign, will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 in Liberal Arts 120.
• “Globalization and Migration: NAU International Film Series Spring 2014” presents “Romántico” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 in Liberal Arts 120.
• The screening of “Two Americans” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17 in Liberal Arts 120.
“I found that film incredibly powerful and it was a really a memorable experience,” Neustadt said of the program last year. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after the showing.”
• Immigration Awareness Month — Week four will open with “Separation of Families/DREAMers,” presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21 in the HLC 2405.
• A talk by Demetria Martinez will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 in the Cline Library Auditorium.
• The screening of “The Graduates” will be presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24 in Liberal Arts 136.
• The discussion “The Persecution of Ethnic Studies” will be presented by Northern Arizona University’s Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU at 6 p.m. Friday, April 25 in Liberal Arts 136.

Durante una entrevista el año pasado, Robert Neustadt dijo que sería para los estudiantes decidir si quieren continuar “Semana de Concientización sobre la Inmigración” en la Universidad del Norte de Arizona en los años futuros.
“Depende de los estudiantes. No voy a decir que este será la primera Semana de Concientización sobre la inmigración en la NAU, pero no me sorprendería”, Neustadt, profesor de español y director de Estudios Latinoamericanos en la NAU, fue citado el año pasado.
Bueno, aparentamente, los estudiantes estaban tan animados por la respuesta al esfuerzo inicial del año pasado que el programa se ha ampliado a todo el mes de abril.
“Al principio, pensamos que si nos tomamos una semana de eventos y repartirlos por todo el mes, sería menos intensa”, dijo Neustadt recientemente. Sin embargo, a medida que más eventos continuaron añadido, “es ahora cuatro intensas semanas. Tenemos un montón de cosas.
