Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Jarabe Mexicano on May 6

FLAGSTAFF — Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Jarabe Mexicano at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6 at the Center for Indigenous Music and Culture, 213 S. San Francisco St., Flagstaff.

Taking their name from the Spanish term for the mixture of regional Mexican styles of music, Jarabe Mexicano  integrates their assorted musical training into a vast Latin repertoire that includes traditional Boleros, Huapangos, Sones, and Rancheras as well as more contemporary genres such as Mexican Cumbia, Doo W

op, and American Standards. This musical fusion has proven to appeal to audiences of all ages and backgrounds with its dynamic energy and festive nostalgia. Jarabe’s appearance at the Independence Day Celebration presented by the Mexican Consulate was enthusiastically received, with elegant attendees dancing the night away to the group’s captivating rhythms and engaging charisma.

Jarabe is in high demand and performs a wide range of programming, such as their recent concert for the San Diego Latino Film Festival to their upcoming educational artist residency with the Latino Arts String Program (LASP) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Other appearances coming soon include an educational tour of Baja California, sponsored by the U.S. Consulate, as well as presentations at Northern Arizona University’s Center for Indigenous Music and Culture, the Carbondale Mountain Fair, and the Music in the Mountains Festival in Durango, Colorado.

The ensemble features the talents of lead vocalist Gustavo Alcoser, band leader Mario Eguía on requinto (a small high-pitched guitar), Kevin Lomes on vihuela (a guitar-like instrument associated with mariachi music), Alex Tapia on percussion and guitar, and bassist Oskar Beckmann.

The cost is $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
