Ceramics – Hand Building
with Ben Roti
November 26 – January 7, 2025: Tuesdays, 1–4pm

This fun and creative class is for beginning and experienced ceramicists.  Tap into your creative self and experience various hand-building techniques. Make bowls, vases, mugs, serving platters, and boxes, using slabs, molds, and textures. The possibilities are endless.  Each class will include a demonstration and individual instruction that will help you achieve your goals.

The Sedona Arts Center’s ceramic department operates free from the constraints of grades and benefits from the talents of its ceramic faculty and assistants as well as nationally recognized guest instructors. This combination allows our department to offer flexible and diverse programming in both traditional and contemporary techniques.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

Ceramics – Thursdays
with Laura “Lolo” Aileen Howe
November 28 – January 9, 2025: Thursdays, 4–7pm

This six-week course focuses on developing, strengthening and advancing one’s skills using the potters’ wheel, as well as understanding the properties of clay in order to expand one’s potential to architecturally create a version of what one envisions. Slab roller, extruder and forms are also available to create functional and decorative pieces. Have fun, gain knowledge, build skills and confidence.

Small class size ensures that each student receives personalized, one-on-one instruction and encouragement. The Sedona Arts Center’s ceramic department operates free from the constraints of grades. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings, glazes, and the opportunity to attend one open studio session per week.

Painting Luminous Watercolors with Impressionistic Brushwork
with Betty Carr
December 2–4: Monday – Wednesday

Learn to capture the beauty of light in this three-day workshop! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject in watercolor. Students will explore a variety of locations in beautiful Sedona.

During her workshop Betty begins each day with a demonstration/ lecture covering tools, techniques, brushwork, problems and solutions. Emphasis throughout the workshop is on organization and simplification of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create a dynamic, coherent composition.

Betty Carr’s energetic style and enthusiasm for painting and teaching create an infectious atmosphere of adventure and “can do” among her students. She has traveled the country teaching workshops for many years. Her instructional book “Seeing the Light” is available through North Light Books.

Holiday Pyrography: A Wood Burning Workshop
with Jillian Sander
December 14: Saturday, 2–5pm

Learn how to craft stunning miniature scenes using wood and heat! An art form dating back to the 17th century, wood burning is a medium that manifests a unique kind of raw beauty. In this course, students will explore techniques relating to line work, pattern, and most importantly, how to set a piece up for success. Students will work on raw wood disks, and will finish the class with a handful of sweet ornaments, perfect for the holidays! This all-levels course is perfect for illustrators and wood-workers alike and offers an easy going environment to those interested in experimentation.

Intuitive Abstract Painting
with Casey Cheuvront
December 15: Sunday, 11am–4pm

This workshop focuses on intuitive, instinctive mark-making and painting, allowing student painters to work without preconceived plan or design, and permitting intuitive elements to occur naturally through the creative process.

We will begin with a brief review of basic art principles, a brief demo, and move into materials management and hands-on painting.

Scholarships are an important part of Sedona Arts Center. It has a long history in providing students in need of financial assistance, the ability to hone their skills and creative talents. Art classes and workshops also allow an emotional break from daily life and offer social interaction with fellow lovers of art. We are proud to offer our scholarship program, with the help of The Kling Family Foundation and the Debbie Winslow Scholarship Fund, which allow us to continue this long standing opportunity.
