Arizona Latinos Arts and Cultural Center hosts annual Day of the Dead exhibit and street festival
PHOENIX – The Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center (ALAC) will host its annual Dia de Los Muertos/Day of the Dead art exhibit and street festival on Saturday, November 2.
The street fair begins at 1 p.m. outside of the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center, 147 E. Adams, in downtown Phoenix. The art exhibit kicks off at 6 p.m. on November 2 and runs until the end of December. Admission is free.
“ALAC’s Dia de Los Muertos event is an occasion to honor and celebrate those who have passed with offerings of art, food, dance, and, most importantly, traditional commemorative altars,” said ALAC Executive Director Elizabeth Toledo. “The holiday is a blend of celebration and spiritualism that reminds the community of the Mexican traditions of our indigenous and European rots. It’s truly a beautiful and artful event. We invite the entire community to join us.”
The outdoor activities on November 2 will feature a lowrider and lowrider bomba car show, more than two dozen art and food vendors, booths, artists displays, and live music by the regional Mexican music bands Distinto Sierrano, Chavalones del Rancho, and El Domador. Local radio DJ Benny Arce will emcee the music performances.
The art exhibit opens at 6 p.m. Dozens of local and regional artists will be displaying their work. The public is invited to attend dressed in their best Catrina or Catrin attire.
Toledo will host a short program starting at 7:30 p.m. featuring an introduction of the artists in this year’s exhibit, a new Dia de Los Muertos monologue by Phoenix-based actor-playwright James E. Garcia, and a Catrinas Flamencas dance performance sponsored by the Phoenix World Arts Collective with Franchesa Flamenco and guitarist James Soll.
