From a print making demonstration by Southern California artists visiting Flagstaff, to an Ofrenda 101 cultural education session for county employees and an information display at a local library, the community found a number of ways to celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month in Coconino County.

The HeArt Box gallery in downtown Flagstaff presented “Sendero Gráfico: Southwest Route” with Los Angeles artists Daniel González and Pável Acevedo on Oct. 15.
The artists displayed and sold a variety of their print work during the event, many which touched on Day of the Dead and the Mexican graphic art tradition. They also demonstrated their ink screen making talents, with patrons purchasing an array of clothing featuring their artwork.

Members of Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces have been busy preparing for the 21st annual Celebraciones de la Gente, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26-27 at the Museum of Northern Arizona. They have also been making presentations as part of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).
One of the presentations was made on Oct. 9 to employees of the sporting good retailer REI, talking about the significants of the retailer’s location in the old Saw Mill, or “Molino,” off of Butler Ave.
Members then held an Ofrenda / Altar 101 “Lunch and Learn” class on Oct. 16 for Coconino County employees.The session included the basics of creating an ofrenda including belongings and photos of their dearly departed, the meaning of the colors of candles, the use of salt and water and the aromas of marigolds and copal, which are designed to welcome the departed during the traditional Día de los Muertos (Nov. 1-2). The class concluded with the county’s annual salsa tasting competition.

As part of the promotion of Celebraciones, members of Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces created a display table at the downtown Flagstaff Public Library, which presented information of the significance of the event.
