In this workshop you will learn the basic concepts of Nature Journaling and overview and practice of illustration and watercolor.  Ed and Julie are both experienced hikers and began Nature Journaling many years ago while living in Phoenix. They have honed their process, focus and skills over the years and will share with their students a fun way to enhance their outdoor and hiking experience while creating a journal documenting their travels.

This one-day workshop will involve an up to 2.5 mile hike at a location in Sedona to be determined. 

In this workshop we engage in Zen creativity to explore the art of life and death.Using specially made Chinese brushes, ink, and paper – all provided for you to use and keep after the workshop – Alok will ask you to paint things that are impossible to paint so that you can be comfortable with not-knowing and be available to the intelligence and creativity prior to thought. In that deep intimacy, you-as-the-brush can move forth with freedom and wonder. We let go of our customary identification with who we are and who we are supposed to be and our need to know how to do it, so that we can show up for the gift of healing into death and into life which may not be so different from showing up for the creativity prior to knowing who we are and what to do.

Alok might ask you to paint the story of Zhou Zhou who was asked, “When great calamities arrive, how shall we respond?” he replied,”‘Welcome!”…or you might paint Rumi’s saying, “God has only 4 words, ‘Come Dance With Me!’”…or Alok might ask you to paint Ryokan’s haiku, “The thief left it behind/ the moon at my window.” Or we all might paint some grief suggested by you that has dredged you deeply or some surprise awakening that might bring us all home.

Through demonstration and one-on-one instruction, students will learn to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s wheel or techniques to create hand-built works. Slab roller, extruder and forms are also available to create functional and decorative pieces. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings and glazes, and one open studio session per week.

This six-week course focuses on developing, strengthening and advancing one’s skills using the potters wheel, as well as understanding the properties of clay in order to expand one’s potential to architecturally create a version of what one envisions. Have fun, gain knowledge and confidence.

Small class size ensures that each student receives personalized, one-on-one instruction and encouragement. Open for ages 12 through adult. The Sedona Arts Center’s ceramic department operates free from the constraints of grades. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings, glazes, and the opportunity to attend one open studio session per week.

Learn how to create breathtaking artwork by using time-saving colored penciltechniques.  Barbara will take you through classical and contemporary approaches in drawing during this two day workshop. Artists of all levels will advance their skills as they draw along with Barbara. Students will create three small projects that focus on value, form, color and blending. Colored pencil may become your favorite medium because it is clean, non-toxic, versatile, and fun. Once you try it, you will be hooked!

Halloween is a night filled to the brim with magic. Autumn is in the air and crisp leaves crunch underfoot. Trick-or-treaters make their rounds, seeking out the houses wreathed in cobwebs and adorned in twinkling lights, upon whose doorsteps they’ll find a familiar fall friend…
Alongside bats and cats, the humble pumpkin is perhaps the most iconic of Halloween symbols. By signing up for this workshop, your kiddo can learn how to transform a plain pumpkin into an awesome jack o lantern! Using safe, kid-friendly carving kits, students will have a blast exploring all of the sculptural possibilities within a simple pumpkin. These little artists will discover new and exciting techniques to craft the most whimsical pumpkin on the block.

Open to kids of all ages!

Painting nocturnes is one of Krystal’s favorite things to paint and so is giving you the tools and techniques to create successfully…no matter the time of day. You will learn from Krystal how to choose the best sight, set up, and process to paint nocturnes from life which will help you carry the last rays of the day into the night in your work. You will effectively learn how to remove the “Fear Factor” from any nighttime scene in a way that fits in with your unique creativity and skill set.

The first evening you will participate in an interactive demo of a sunset scene followed by the transition into a nocturne. Take notes and paint along as you like. There will be no one-on-one instruction during the demo time.

The next evening we will follow the same pattern Krystal shared the night before and a return to the same scene. This time you will be painting and Krystal will be right beside you, helping you along.

Be sure to check out the supply list to see what gear to consider and the preferred paints, colors and surfaces that will be used. Have a few panels to choose from. 6×12 – 16×12 size range. One for your sunset and one for your nocturne. We will be revisiting them on day two.
