United Way of Northern Arizona will be administering $700,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds on behalf of the City of Flagstaff to benefit nonprofits recovering from challenges due to Covid-19.
The funds are intended to assist organizations working in Flagstaff that had an increased demand for services or suffered declines in fees or donations due to the pandemic.
There are three different categories that make up the funds:
- $300,000 in aid for nonprofits focusing on food and food insecurity
- $150,000 in aid for non-food related nonprofits
- $250,000 in educational assistance for K-12 students
For food-related and other nonprofits, the funds may be used for program staff salaries, supplies, equipment, and other costs, as long as it directly addresses Covid-19 response, mitigation or prevention, or negative economic impacts from the pandemic.
Meanwhile, educational assistance will be focused on early learning services, addressing the impacts of lost instructional time, and helping high-poverty school districts to advance equitable funding. It also can be used towards evidence-based services to address the academic, social, mental and emotional health needs of students.
Individual funding request amounts can range from $10,000 to $25,000 for nonprofits and a minimum of $25,000 for educational assistance. The deadline to submit grant applications is February 21.
A review panel of local volunteers will evaluate the applications and score them using a rubric. Proposed funding recommendations will be voted on by the UWNA Board of Directors and presented to the City, with award letters being delivered to organizations this May.
