Nov. 23 — City hosts presentation in celebration of Native American Heritage Month

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff, Office of Indigenous Initiatives presents Darius L. Smith, Director, City and County of Denver Anti-Discrimination Office; Liaison, Denver American Indian Commission for a presentation entitled “Peacemaking and Communicating Ethically Through a Native Lens, Connecting Past Present Future”.

The presetnation will be held on November 23, 2021 from 11:00a.m. – 12:30 p.m. MST.

Presentation Session: Darius will tell his story of self-determination through his Navajo and African American experience and how he facilitates resolution of civil rights discrimination complaints by utilizing the Indigenous form of “Peacemaking”. Darius draws from deep cultural connections – making sense of cultural intersections and how that plays out in social, economic, professional and systems areas. He will share his commonsense interview techniques of how he uses motivational interviewing when working with the community and how ethical communication is the key to true dialogue. Utilizing common sense principals and encouraging ethical settlements has helped his office successfully evolve within city structure. He also proudly provides staff support to the Denver American Indian and African American Commissions.
