Zen Creativity: A Brush with Emptiness
with Alok Hsu Kwang-han
October 9 – 10, 2021
This is a fun workshop! You will explore Zen creativity by being “present, available, playful and not knowing.” All the while, you’ll honor and make friends with a set of 3 brushes Alok designed and had made in the best traditional brush factory in China, 250 g. of very good Yidege liquid ink, plenty of “raw” Xuan paper, and a piece of 100% black wool felt Alok had imported from India to lay beneath each painting essential for reflecting the subtle or bold ink/water patterns back into the absorbent paper. You get to keep all these ‘friends’ with you beyond the conclusion of this workshop on Zen Creativity!

Whether you are a beginner, a return student, or an accomplished artist, in this workshop you will have many fresh opportunities to let go of the past– what you already know, the accomplished level you are caught in and perhaps bored with, or the fear whether you can “do” it. And to welcome in each Zen moment, an intelligence prior to thought with all its schemes and maneuvers. Alok will inspire, surprise, and guide you to be rooted and move from your energy body, to rest in the spaciousness of your being, to become comfortable and intimate with the power of not-knowing, and to allow your brush—or you—to dance from emptiness.

Stronger, More Dynamic Paintings
with Betty Carr
October 20 — 22, 2021
The focus of this workshop is to learn to create a strong foundation around which to build your paintings. In plein air painting artists need to get their ideas down very quickly because of the changing light conditions and weather concerns. We’ll learn to start by focusing on the idea of using big value shapes (groups of similar values) in order  to simplify and design the surface. From there we will explore ways to finish the painting by deciding where to break down those big shapes into smaller shapes of color and value.  Utilizing these two approaches will allow students to create a “road map” to guide you through the painting process so you don’t lose your way and start chasing the light mid-painting when the light or weather has changed. This process will make a stronger structure and a more dynamic painting in the end.

Capturing the Light
with Manon Sander
October 31 — November 2, 2021
Learn Manon’s secrets about how to make a luminous, light-filled painting by implementing a technique that will take all randomness out of your decision making as you build your painting. Making a painting consists of intentional choices in regards to composition, design, value, color, edges, etc. Being a strong proponent of making these choices intentionally rather than in a random, trial-and-error way, Manon gives her students the reasons behind every step. This workshop will include demos during which she will inject valuable lessons about design and how to simplify a scene and will focus heavily on how to see value and color, how to mix color using the four questions that make color mixing so much easier, how to avoid muddy or chalky colors, and how to use edges to lead the eye through the painting. You will have lots of fun and plenty of time of time at your own easel in the comfort of the studio during which Manon will be by your side guiding you through your painting.

Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media. Many techniques, materials, compositions and above all emotion, play off each other in creating the work. Part of the adventure is not knowing where you are going until you get there! You will become thrilled with possibility as you journey through this process. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the knowledge of layering textures, colors and feelings while executing shapes utilizing a structure of positive and negative space.

All of the paints used will be water-based.

Meditation to Creation
with Ann Brownfield Meara
November 4 — 5, 2021
At the Meditation to Creation Workshop, find inner guidance to create something beautiful in addition to reflecting, writing and art making, you will also learn and practice the ancient art of meditation. Out of mediation, profound creative insights arise.

Creativity is a process of allowing. It begins with an inner spark, which you feed, develop and actualize. Creativity must be nurtured into being. It can be both magical and astounding. But it arises when we relax enough to invite it in. Coaxing forth its flow, a wellspring of creative solutions bubble to the surface. Inner wisdom helps us initiate skillful, creative action.
Freeing the mind through meditation creates the ground for equanimity–that fertile state where brilliance breaks free.
