Student/workforce housing at
CCC Page taking shape
CCC and development partner, Genterra, present concept to Page city staff, officials
PAGE, Ariz. – Coconino Community College, through a Public Private Partnership with GenTerra Enterprises, is working on a student and workforce housing project on the CCC Page site, where the funding does not come from CCC, but from fundraising done by GenTerra. Representatives from CCC and GenTerra met with Page city staff and officials Thursday, March 4, to begin the process of making the project a reality. And city staff appear ready to work to help get the project out of the conceptual stage and into breaking ground.
Tim Suan, Community Development Director for the city, opened the meeting attended by several staff members to provide input on the presentation of a conceptual site plan offered by Gary Todd of Todd Associates, a partner of GenTerra and architect for the proposed project.
Tim Kinney, President and CEO of GenTerra, and Richard Bowen, Senior Vice President of GenTerra, said they were present to offer some insight on the conceptual plan as well as begin the conversation on next steps.
CCC President Dr. Colleen A. Smith looks on with Gary Todd, architect, as Kay Leum CCC’s executive director of Extended Learning, identifies some features in a conceptual plan of a proposed student/workforce housing project on CCC property in Page.
Gear up for computer support job with CCC
The Google IT certification program is perfect for students who do not have any experience or background in computers.
Get a Google IT Service Professional certification by the end of the year
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coconino Community College is collaborating with Google to offer an Information Technology Support Professional certificate beginning this summer, and the three-class program can be completed before the end of the year.
“The students will get not only a certificate from CCC, but they will also get their Google certificate – an actual credential from Google,” said Sarah Rencher, faculty for CCC’s Computer Information Systems programs. “Students do not need to have any experience or background. We’re going to teach them everything they need to know to get an entry-level IT support position.”
Lisa Blank, CCC Dean of Career and Technical Education, said, “CCC is really excited to offer this workforce opportunity. It rapidly moves CCC students into jobs that provide a living wage and positions them for numerous career-advancement opportunities. It’s a win for the community, families, students and CCC.”
CCC students get more COVID relief funds
Coconino Community College has more than $500,000 in federal COVID relief funds to distribute to students who qualify.
Awards to students will likely range from $100 to $500
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Students attending Coconino Community College for the spring semester will receive a new round of federal COVID relief funds to help them with the cost of college.
On Dec. 27, 2020, the Coronavirus Response and Relief and Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) was passed into law. CCC will be awarding at least $552,365 in financial aid grants to students. The awards will likely range from $100 to $500 depending on the number of applicants.
“We are thrilled to have an opportunity to continue helping students achieve their education during the pandemic through grants and specialized attention,” said CCC President Dr. Colleen A. Smith. “Through generous help from others, CCC has money to help students go to college, so I encourage you to gear up for summer and fall semester and get started on your future. CCC has both in-person and virtual classes in the schedule.”
CCC nursing students lend a hand
with COVID-19 vaccinations in Flagstaff
CCC’s Nursing roster will take turns at vaccination site
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coconino Community College Nursing student Jodie Santillan marked off a checklist. She prepared the Moderna COVID-19 vaccination to deliver. She swabbed the patient’s arm, and before too much thought could be put into whether the patient would feel it, Santillan delivered the vaccine.
It was one of more than 30 she delivered that day, doing the work to help fulfill her clinical requirements for the Nursing program. All of CCC’s 55 first-year and second-year Nursing students have done or will do at least one clinical rotation at the Fort Tuthill County Park COVID-19 vaccination site.
“As a nursing program, we’re committed to the community we serve,” said Katherine Costa, CCC’s Director of Nursing and Allied Health. “This is a way to contribute and have students be a part of such an historical time. And they get clinical experience.”
CCC Nursing student Jodie Santillan talks with a resident before giving a COVID-19 vaccination during a shift at the Coconino County vaccination site at the Fort Tuthill County Park on Feb. 12.

Two CCC students get seal of approval for
All-Arizona Academic Scholarship
CCC students Jake Zimmerman and Lee Hartwig receive free tuition to attend university in Arizona.
Jake Zimmerman and Lee Hartwig receive scholarship to attend state university
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Two Coconino Community College students – Jake Zimmerman and Lee Hartwig – have been recognized for the prestigious 2021 All-Arizona Academic Team Scholarship.
The scholarship offers free tuition for 60 credit hours at the recipient’s choice of one of the three state universities.
“A financial burden has been taken off my shoulders,” said Zimmerman, who has moved onto Northern Arizona University to continue his studies for a degree in Physical Therapy. “It’s an awesome feeling.”
Hartwig, who is deep into walking his path of becoming a Nurse, is retired after a 20-year career as a U.S. Air Force mechanic. He was recently diagnosed as “disabled,” but that doesn’t diminish his desire to help others. He worried his G.I. Bill funding wouldn’t cover the entire journey to get his bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
“This cemented how I’m going to do it,” Hartwig said. “It’s an honor, without a doubt. This is a big weight off my chest.”
CCC programs in Page get boost from SRP
A $16,000 grant to help healthcare students with training, tools
PAGE, Ariz – Thanks to a generous grant from SRP, Coconino Community College Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician students in Page will get that needed help.
SRP awarded CCC $16,000 to help the students purchase books, training, tools, immunizations and more.
“We are very grateful for the continued generosity of SRP and for the support they are willing to provide to Coconino Community College in Page,” said Kay Leum, Executive Director of Extended Learning. “As we build the pre-health programs at our Page campus, the SRP donation is critical to our student success.”
Leum said that while 2020 has been a challenging year for Coconino County, and particularly northern Coconino County, CCC has brought to Page both the CNA and EMT programs.
“Both of these programs were highly anticipated in the community to help fill workforce employment and training gaps,” Leum said.
CCC healthcare students in Page will receive a needed boost from SRP to complete their studies.

Giving county youth the chance to Step-Up at CCC
Nestle Purina PetCare Company adds $10,000 to the Step-Up Scholarship at the Coconino Community College Foundation for youth in the criminal justice system.
Nestle Purina factory in Flagstaff donates additional $10,000 to scholarship
Young people who cross paths with the Coconino County criminal justice system often have common threads in the tapestries of their lives, according to the professionals at Juvenile Court Services.
They’re usually behind on school credit. They have little educational support at home – not because the parents don’t want to help, but rather, they are often in crisis themselves or working multiple jobs. They’ve typically experienced significant trauma in their lives. Sometimes, there are underlying issues like poverty, substance abuse and mental health disorders.
Getting back on track to a productive life can be daunting, despite the best efforts of family and community. Education is key.
To that end, Nestlé Purina PetCare’s factory in Flagstaff has donated $10,000 to scholarships that help youth who have gone through the county criminal justice system find a path to a college education. Called the Step-Up Scholarship, it is offered through the Coconino Community College (CCC) Foundation.
