COCONINO COUNTY— The Coconino County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 25 changed course on the County Manager Recruitment process opting to interview Steve Peru, an experienced, local candidate for the position.
Peru is the former Coconino County Manager and Clerk of the Board and current Chief External Affairs Officer of the Coconino Community College and President of the Coconino Community College Foundation. The Board will interview Peru on Tuesday, March 2.
The Board of Supervisors expressed the need for continuity of leadership and experience in Coconino County issues during the COVID-19 pandemic as primary driver for the change of direction in the County Manager recruitment.
“There is an overwhelming need for steady leadership and experience at this critical time for the County. The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with major losses, such as the decommissioning of the Navajo Generating Station, has tested Coconino County unlike any other time in recent history. The Board knows we need experience and knowledge of our organization and the communities we serve at the helm of the County. Steve Peru is that type of leader that can help us guide the County to the new normal ahead of us and we are excited to have him rejoin our County team,” Chairman Matt Ryan stated, on behalf of the Board of Supervisors.
“Coconino County is home for my family and me. My career began in the County and I look forward to returning to work with the Board of Supervisors and the entire team at the County. Coconino County has been a leader throughout the pandemic, and in many other circumstances and events, for our communities. I want to thank Dr. Smith, the CCC District Governing Board and CCC Foundation Board for providing me with the opportunity to expand community college opportunities for Coconino County residents.” Steve Peru commented.
When appointed officially, Peru will begin service with the County on April 5. Current County Manager James Jayne, who announced his retirement last December, will serve as a Senior Advisor to Peru to aid in the leadership transition.
