A quick word from the President
Even during this challenging period in our lives, Coconino Community College is making amazing things happen in Coconino County.
The semester is off to a great start, and even though enrollment may not be quite where it was before, faculty and staff across the entire district are working hard to help the semester be a great experience for our students.
I have discovered that our success lies in the teamwork taking place across the college through a virtual format, along with a new problem-solving perspective brought about by this pandemic. We cannot do things the way we have always done them, because so many things in our world are different and changing daily.
The District Governing Board members (elected officials from across the county who volunteer their time) have laid out some inspiring goals for the future of our college. These goals and college priorities can be found in the college’s new Strategic Plan that was approved by the District Governing Board. More than 80 participants from across the college and communities throughout the county helped craft the exciting and innovative priorities for the college that include, among others: student success, progressive business processes, being flexible and responsive to the communities we serve, strategic partnerships, and sustainability through responsible stewardship of economic, public and environmental resources.
Finally, the CCC Foundation, which is led by a very active board of directors, has developed ambitious initiatives in the areas of fundraising, alumni relations and community engagement.
All I can say is – What an exciting time to be at CCC with the District Governing Board setting the stage for a bright future.

CCC begins process for student housing
at Page Center
District Governing Board dedicated to serving communities throughout Coconino County
In an effort to meet a growing need, Coconino Community College has begun the process to develop student and workforce housing at the college’s center in Page.
The CCC District Governing Board, during a meeting on Monday, Aug. 31, unanimously voted to request proposals for a public-private partnership for development of student housing at the Page center.
Patricia Garcia, Governing Board Chair, said, “The District Governing Board is committed to serving our communities throughout Coconino County. We look forward to promoting workforce and economic development in Page through innovative educational and housing solutions. Although the College continues to have significant funding challenges, we are seeking new ways to offer career and technical programs that will meet the unique needs of the Page workforce.”
The model that was approved by the Board would require the developer to finance and maintain a student housing complex that would include short-term rental possibilities for the local workforce in Page.

Small Business Development Center at CCC hires new staff
The experience was really like trying to grab a small sip from a firehose at full blast.
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down business across the state, organizations like the Coconino Small Business Development Center at Coconino Community College stepped into the breach to lend a needed hand.
“When the COVID-19 disaster started, it was just me and Amanda part time,” said Gina Couillard, Director of the Coconino SBDC, adding that Amanda Hyde moved to a full-time business analyst and operations specialist in short order to assist with the demand from local businesses.
Now, with the help of a $108,000 CARES Act grant, the Coconino SBDC will be growing the staff to include another full-time business analyst to help businesses weather the pandemic.
Celebration to support CCC student scholarships goes virtual
Sisters Teneesha (left) and Lakeesha Todacheene of the Page area both received scholarships to attend CCC, thanks to the help of generous donors to the CCC Foundation.
The fundraising event for the CCC Foundation takes place Friday, Oct. 23.
Lakeesha Todacheene received a Raymond Educational Foundation scholarship and a CCC Foundation scholarship to attend school.
She wants to become a Nurse. Her first two semesters, she paid out of pocket.
“It was a struggle,” she said, adding that the scholarships will help with tuition and basic needs.
“I want to thank them for helping me in a way that nobody else would,” Todacheene said.
This year, the CCC Foundation’s Students First Celebration will be held virtually on Friday, Oct. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. The fundraising event is meant to help support scholarships for students like Todacheene.
Each year, the event brings in residents from all over the county. Steve Peru, Executive Director of the CCC Foundation, said that although the pandemic has affected in-person attendance, he’s looking forward to a morning of wonderful “virtual” support for students who need scholarships to attend CCC.

CCC student puts time to good use
Construction Technology Management student Andrea Clayton works on building a toolbox during a recent Building Methods lab at CCC.
Andrea Clayton decides to return to school as last daughter flies the coop
Coconino Community College student Andrea Clayton loves building things with her hands.
“I always think about building stuff,” she said during a recent Building Methods II laboratory session at the Fourth Street campus. “I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day, so this is what I landed on.
Her youngest daughter recently graduated high school.
“I found myself with a little less responsibility and a lot more time on my hands,” Clayton said. “So, I decided it was a good time to go back to school.”
Her current plan is to finish her studies at CCC and then work on a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management from Northern Arizona University. After that, she plans to put in a couple of years at a local construction company, and, with any luck, strike out with her own little construction business.
She appreciates being in the lab.
“It doesn’t sink in the way it does when you do it with your own hands,” she said.
CCC Page CNA student wants to help others
Jewel Benson has the ultimate goal of becoming a Registered Nurse
Four mannequins rest in beds. They are patients, ready and waiting, for the students.
Soon, the students registered in the newly revived Certified Nursing Assistant program at CCC’s center in Page will begin.
“I want to help people,” said Jewel Benson, born and raised in Page, who is one of the new CNA students. “Our bodies are so amazing what they can do.”
Although she enjoys biology and was attending college to study it, Benson said she wanted her education to have more meaning for people. So, she chose to focus in healthcare.
After she receives her certification to become a Nursing Assistant, she hopes to work at the hospital in Page while she completes a degree in Nursing.
“I’d like to go for my master’s someday,”she said.

CCC brings Emergency Medical Technician
training to Page
Classes, starting Oct. 13, are set to begin in the city’s slow season
They are often the first ones on the scene when a person is sick or injured and needs help. They should have compassion, solve problems on the fly, and be able to work under pressure.
Being an Emergency Medical Technician is a rewarding career, and Coconino Community College is offering a course to help Page area residents become certified EMTs. People interested in registering for the 16-week course can find out more about it by contacting Jessica.Dodson@coconino.edu, or by calling (928) 645-3987.
“Just like the Certified Nursing Assistant program, the EMT course is something people in Page have been asking about for a long time,” said Kay Leum, Executive Director of Extended Learning at CCC. She added that the course was designed to run the last eight weeks of the fall and the first eight weeks of spring, which is a less busy time of year for the community. “It’s the perfect time to learn a new skill and get certified.”
Aaron Keisling, Page Fire Department engineer and paramedic (left), and Robert DeLeon, PFD firefighter and paramedic, will be teaching a 16-week Emergency Medical Technician course at Coconino Community College in Page starting Oct. 13.

Serve your community: Complete the Census
There are many ways to serve your community, but one of the easiest and most important this year is completing the 2020 Census. It takes 10 minutes, but it impacts funding and representation for our community for the next 10 years. The deadline for response has been moved up to Sept. 30, so make sure to get your household counted today.
Want to do more to help get out the count? Get out the word to people in your networks. Support the Census on social media, and make sure your family and friends have completed theirs. Own a business or run an organization? Talk to your employees and your clientele about how the Census impacts our community. Need materials to communicate with? Contact the Coconino County Community Census Team at 928-607-9709, or email Greg Webb, to requests media and print materials.
