FLAGSTAFF — The city of Flagstaff operates a small network of radio-telemetered gauges that transmit rainfall and streamflow information in real-time. The primary function of these gauges is to monitor and document severe rainfall and flooding events and to make this information available to emergency responders and stormwater engineers.
Due to the Museum Fire of 2019, Flagstaff residents are encouraged to utilize this sensor data notification system to receive e-mail notifications of heavy rainfall in the community. This system is separate from Coconino County’s Emergency Alert system and provides alerts of one inch per one hour of rainfall that could potentially produce flooding at the user’s selected rain gauge(s). Users can select which gauge(s) to receive notifications from. The data, and alert network, are not a replacement for official city or county emergency notifications. This is a free additional service created and maintained by the city of Flagstaff’s Water Services Department.
