Emphasizing Abstraction
Master Class Intensive with Stuart Shils
November 13 – 15, 2020

Note: Class will start with a digital presentation November 12, 2020 at 7 pm

Three immersive, fast paced days in the studio are focused on clarifying observation while holding the loaded brush.  Working from both the model and from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll paint our way through a guided sequence of visual exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on developing a deeper familiarity with drawing in concise, abstract graphic language with graphite, collage and crayon.

Re-Framing the Ordinary
with Stuart Shils

July 24 – 26, 2020 An online workshop with Stuart Shils
July 24 – 26, 2020 | 9:00 – 11:30 am daily (Arizona time) Maximum enrollment 12.
3 days at 2.5 hours a day with a follow-up meeting of 30 minutes arranged with each student individually after the workshop. Maximum enrollment 12.

Note: The first meeting is an evening orientation talk with Stuart Shils: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I NOTICE JACK NICHOLSON? Thursday, July 23, 4:30 – 6:00 pm (Arizona time)

These three lively mornings will explore the relationship between drawing and observation, examining how close and clarified observation can hone our visually analytical minds, regardless of what it is we are looking at. Each day will begin with either a slide talk or a guided conversation exploring issues like:

-visual confidence
-the meaning of simplification
-the shaping and reshaping expectations
-where to begin and how to begin
-what matters on paper

Followed by a sequence of guided exercises intended as tools for carrying back to your workaday studio lives. This is not about recipes nor techniques but rather, addressing the evolution and structure of your own visual literacy. Materials will be pencils and paper and a few other materials for collage.

The Inspired Abstract Online Workshop
with Julie Bernstein Engelmann

July 11, 12, and 18, 2020 This three-day workshop gives you a powerful foundation for abstract painting. Using layers, you’ll be guided to enter the painting process naturally, develop a deep and luscious visual space, and weave into it exquisite brush-marks that grow from a personally meaningful inspiration. You’ll learn to see the spirit in your painting and gently enhance it, so it can shine powerfully.

A focus of this workshop is to find ease in bringing your mid-process “beautiful abstract mess” to completion. You’ll create two acrylic paintings that embody meaning, naturalness, and spatial depth and flow – qualities that lift an abstract painting from amateur to professional.

Zen Creativity: A Brush with Emptiness
with Alok Hsu Kwang-han

October 3 – 4, 2020
at Sedona Arts Center
This is a fun workshop. We explore Zen creativity by being “present, available, playful and not knowing”. All the while, we honor and make friends with a set of 3 brushes Alok designed and had made in the best traditional brush factory in China, 250 g. of very good Yidege liquid ink, plenty of “raw” Xuan paper, and a piece of 100% black wool felt Alok had imported from India to lay beneath each painting essential for reflecting the subtle or bold ink/water patterns back into the absorbent paper. You get to keep all these ‘friends’ with you beyond the conclusion of this workshop on Zen Creativity.
