FLAGSTAFF — Nearly 100 people attended the Flagstaff’s historic Black Community’s 65th Annual Juneteenth Community Celebration on FACEBOOK LIVE! on Saturday, June 20. The event, hosted by Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans, Bernadine Lewis, Khara House, Ricardo Guthrie and Shawn Johnson, was presented by the Coconino County African American Council, in partnership with Flagstaff’s Southside Community Association.

The annual Juneteenth Community Celebration in Flagstaff, traditionally held at the the Murdoch Community in Center in Flagstaff, has previously featured Performers, information booths and food. The in-person event was canceled this year due concerns with the COVID-19 emergency.
The annual event commemorates the end of slavery when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 with news that the Civil War had ended.
Supporters of civil rights celebrate African American freedom and the subsequent achievements within the culture while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
“Juneteenth is rightfully also known as Freedom Day,” said AAAC member Khara House stated in 2019. “As Coretta Scott King once noted, ‘Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.’ We celebrate Juneteenth in honor of the ongoing process and struggle for freedom that falls upon each generation to take up, carry on and move forward.”
