This week’s Insider is brought to you by:
Weekly Update With Dr. Paul Keim: Drugs and Therapies for COVID-19
More than fifteen hundred clinical trials are underway worldwide related to the coronavirus disease. Many of these experiments are focused on developing new drugs and therapies to treat patients. Along with public health measures, those are an important line of defense against COVID-19 until a vaccine is created. Learn more at KNAU.org.
Play Us a Tune: Love, Loss and Shredding Guitars
18-year-old musician Dylan Walker had just formed his band, Miramont, and had a few gigs lined up when the coronavirus pandemic hit, cancelling all public shows. Making matters even more devastating, Dylan’s father, Haven, also a performing musician, died unexpectedly at the age of 47 just a few weeks before the shutdown. In this week’s installment of our series Play Us a Tune, Dylan talks about his dad’s musical influence and performs a song by Widespread Panic that he and his dad often played together. Poetry Friday: For the Class of 2020
The Class of 2020 is experiencing a graduation season the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, there are no large, group ceremonies and no big after-parties. Commencements are mostly being held online or in parking lots where graduates receive their diplomas drive-thru-style. Sussa Gitomer is about to graduate from the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy. Her plan is to attend Bangor University in Wales, but she doesn’t know yet if that will happen in-person or online. All-Girl Robotics Team in Afghanistan Works on Low-Cost Ventilator … With Car Parts
In Afghanistan, a group of teenage girls are trying to build a mechanized, hand-operated ventilator for coronavirus patients, using a design from M.I.T. and parts from old Toyota Corollas. It sounds like an impossible dream, but then again, the all-girls robotics team in question is called the “Afghan Dreamers.” Learn more at NPR’s blog, Goats and Soda.
Earth Notes: Martian Home-Away-From-Home: Mars Desert Research Station
When seeking a terrestrial equivalent to the Red Planet, the Mars Society chose the red rock country of Utah and a site half-way between Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Parks. In 2001, the Colorado-based non-profit established their Mars Desert Research Station just outside the tiny town of Hanksville, Utah. Learn more at KNAU.org.
We bake pizzas the RIGHT way – in a stone deck oven. No conveyer belts here! Every Fratelli Pizza starts its life as home made dough right here in our kitchen and is then proofed to perfection, hand tossed, mated with the freshest ingredients & baked to crispy, golden perfection. Our housemade pizza sauce uses only tomatoes from Stanislaus County, California. We searched high and low until we found the best Wisconsin whole milk mozzarella and were sure you’ll agree. Our methods might take a little longer, but is one of the reasons our pies are super tasty. Your patience will be rewarded with the best pizza available in Flagstaff.
