A quick word from the President
|
The students here at Coconino Community College continually inspire and amaze me. It’s one of the many reasons I love my work here and why I’ve devoted my professional career to community college students.
I recently joined two of our students attending the Phi Theta Kappa All-Arizona Academic Team Recognition Ceremony in Phoenix. They are shining examples of the people who choose to start their postsecondary educational path at community college. Keren Chavez plans on studying Biomedical Science and wants to help underdeveloped communities. Shawna Greyeyes has her sights set on becoming a researcher in Environmental Science to bring what she learns back to her community on the Navajo Nation.
Our students – their lives and their dreams for their future – are as diverse as our Diversity Statement illustrates: “Coconino Community College recognizes and respects diversity and the value it brings to our communities. We appreciate and welcome cultures, identities, beliefs, experiences and all that makes us unique. CCC champions and takes action to build an inclusive work and learning environment. We are allies and advocates, navigating a respectful dialogue about our shared humanity.”
Shawna and Keren are among the 300,000 students statewide who attend community colleges. Their stories fill me with gratitude that I have the opportunity to come to work at a community college every day.

Rally urges lawmakers to invest in Arizona Community Colleges
|
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Coconino Community College student Rosa Ortiz grew up in Flagstaff, and when it was time for college, she knew she wasn’t ready for a big university.
“I’m taking the steps I need to prepare for university,” Ortiz said. “Here, I feel at home.”
Ortiz is among more than nearly 300,000 students in Arizona who attend community colleges. She and students, staff and presidents of all 10 of the state’s community college districts were at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for Community College Day at the Capitol. Their purpose was to rally for a day to urge legislators to invest in community colleges and the future of Arizona.

‘Resilience’ exhibit makes stop at CCC
|

Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans was a featured speaker at a reception welcoming the “Resilience” exhibit to the CCC Lone Tree campus.

More than 50 students, faculty and community members attend opening
|
Noel Swimmer, a criminology student at Coconino Community College, was inspired to find out that resilience is not something that is done alone.
She was among 50 students, faculty and community members at the opening reception for “Resilience: Women in Flagstaff’s Past and Present” on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the CCC Lone Tree campus.
The Resilience exhibit is a collaborative project by the Arizona Historical Society’s Pioneer Museum and the Martin-Springer Institute at Northern Arizona University. The exhibit shares the stories of Flagstaff women who face extraordinary challenges and overcame hardships, painful legacies and adverse environments. The roving exhibit has been displayed at other locations in the city.
The exhibit will be on display at CCC through the months of February and March and will be displayed during Black History Month and Women’s History Month.

CCC Cross-Country Comets gain momentum

CCC Dean of Student Affairs Tony Williams has been selected as the college’s first athletic director in anticipation of the formation of men’s and women’s cross-country teams.

The college awaits results of a National Junior College Athletic Association visit March 3
|
Officials with the National Junior College Athletic Association paid a visit to Coconino Community College on Tuesday, March 3 to decide if CCC can field a cross-country team for men and women.
The decision will be made by the NJCAA Board of Regents on April 3.
That news and other updates were presented during the Cross-Country Comets Kickoff at the Lone Tree campus on Thursday, Feb. 20. More than 60 students, parents, running enthusiasts and college supporters attended the event.
CCC President Colleen Smith shared that sports programs at community college adds another dimension to the educational experience, particularly in northern Arizona – a place known for the high-altitude training of athletes.
“I think it means a great deal to our students and our community,” Smith said.

CCC seeks Distinguished Service Award nominations
|
|
Coconino Community College is seeking nominations for its prestigious Distinguished Service Award.
The award is normally given to one recipient each year, and any resident of the county may nominate a person for the award. Current members of the CCC District Governing board and individuals employed by the College are exempt from nomination.
“I look forward to the Distinguished Service Award because it recognizes the selfless efforts of a college supporter dedicated to putting our student first,” said CCC President Dr. Colleen A. Smith, PhD.
The Distinguished Service Award Committee meets once a year to review nominations, and an award is not necessarily presented each year. Past recipients of the award include Coconino County Supervisor Lena Fowler, former Mayor Joe Donaldson and former Northern Arizona University Presidents Dr. Eugene Hughes and Dr. John Haeger among others.
The deadline for nomination is April 1, 2020. Nomination forms may be found online here. If a candidate is chosen for the award, the award is presented at the CCC Foundation’s Annual Meeting, Alumni Awards and Breakfast in September.

The CCC Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding service, leadership and support to the college and to the educational enrichment of Coconino County.
Nominees must be a resident of Coconino County at the time of nomination, and they must have affected or substantially contributed a major accomplishment for the benefit of CCC and to the educational enrichment of district residents.

Academic Team Scholarship recipients

Two Coconino Community College students have been recognized for the prestigious 2020 All-Arizona Academic Team Scholarship.
The scholarship provides free tuition for 60 credit hours at the recipient’s choice of one of the three state universities – Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.
Shawna Greyeyes and Keren Chavez received the honor from CCC.
“It means a lot to me,” Greyeyes said. “It allows me to be the first in my family to get a degree.”
She wouldn’t have been able to attend the university of her choice, University of Arizona, without the scholarship. She’s focused on becoming a researcher in Environmental Science, where she plans on bringing what she has learned back to the Navajo Nation to contribute to her community.
“That is huge for me,” Chavez said. “I’m really excited because this means I can focus more on school and finish on time.”
She works full time to pay for her studies and it would have taken her longer to complete her studies without the help of the scholarship. She plans on studying Biomedical Science, and her hope is to go medical school. Having grown up in Mexico, her ultimate goal is to help in underdeveloped communities.

March 10 Comet Talk: “How Far: Myths and Distance in our Night Sky,” by Dr. Nat White, Emeritus Astronomer, Lowell Observatory. Begins at 6 p.m., at the Fourth Street Innovation Center, 3000 N. Fourth St., Room B34.

CCC Page non-credit courses build workforce

Students gain knowledge and build resumes with the FREE workshops
|
PAGE, Ariz. – The student said that she enjoyed taking the free courses, and she’s grateful that she’s learning skills to improve her success in a job search.
She was among more than 150 residents of Page and the surrounding area taking advantage of noncredit courses being offered at CCC in Page. By the end of March, CCC will have offered 19 workshops.
The courses vary in subject: Business Basics; Occupational Health & Safety Administration Training; Human Resources Training; and CPR and First-Aid.
Coming this month, there will be courses in Up Skill Workshops for Leaders, Managers and Supervisors, focusing on Leading Effectively Using Emotional Intelligence, Human Resources Basics and Managing Diverse Cultures. Also this month, there will be additional Marketing, CPR and OSHA trainings.
Funding for the courses is made possible through Coconino County Health & Human Services Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program. The workforce development workshops are a partnership among CCC, ARIZONA@WORK and Coconino County Health & Human Services.

The two-day series is broken into four parts:

- 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.: the 10 Key Components to Building and Maintaining a Great Website
April 22
- 8 a.m. to noon: How to be Found on Google: An Introduction to SEO
