VITA Helping Residents on Taxes
United Way of Northern Arizona and its community partners are once again helping our friends and neighbors save significantly on their taxes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program throughout northern Arizona.
Under the program, IRS-certified volunteers complete tax returns for low-to-moderate income households, persons with disabilities and taxpayers with limited English speaking abilities.
To use the program, call to schedule an appointment. (See list of phone numbers below). Most sites are using the Scan2Go process, in which taxpayers bring their paperwork to their local VITA location to be scanned. A VITA volunteer then completes the tax return and arrangements are made for the taxpayer to either pick up the tax return or have it mailed to them.
VITA makes a profound difference in the lives of those helped. Last year, more than 100 volunteers spent thousands of hours to file 3,409 tax returns for individuals and families in Northern Arizona. The total of the tax refunds for those returns was a whopping $5,007,692, including almost $2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits.
All filers need to bring the following with them:
  • Valid picture ID of taxpayer, spouse (if filing jointly), and dependents
  • Social security or ITIN cards for all household members
  • Proof of income (all W2 and 1099 forms)
  • 1095-A form if you purchased health care from the marketplace
  • 1098T and college statement for students with qualified post-secondary education expenses
  • Name, address and tax ID number of your child care provider and the amount paid to the provider last year (if applicable)
  • Deductible expenses, such as mortgage, property tax and donations
  • A copy of last year’s return is also helpful
Many thanks to the network of partners and community investors helping to make this program possible, including: Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff, Bank of the West, the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, Flagstaff Unified School District, The Hopi Foundation, Northland Pioneer College, W.L. Gore & Associates, and Wells Fargo.
