COCONINO COUNTY — The Coconino County Sustainable Building Program Sustainable Building Tour will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, 703 E. Sawmill Rd. Flagstaff.
The Coconino County Sustainable Building Tour is hosted in partnership with the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program, Willow Bend Environmental Education Center and is a part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science and the American Solar Energy Society’s National Tour.
The self-guided tour, with new locations, features eight different sites that attendees can learn more about energy and water efficient technologies and approaches, as well as alternative building methods. The tour features a tiny house, a strawbale and cordwood house, a downtown historic home renovated for sustainability and efficiency, northern Arizona’s first LEED certified residence and a net-zero energy home.
This year’s tour will also include a kick-off presentation from 9 – 10 a.m. at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center on the County’s new Innovative Materials and Systems Pilot Program. This program encourages sustainability, cultural inclusion and innovation in the built environment and economy. The program allows rural residential owner-builders an option to choose an exemption from structural building code permitting requirements for projects that incorporate new technology, innovative approaches, earthen and/or recycled materials and culturally traditional building practices that fall within the pilot program’s requirements.
The self-guided tour is free, with a suggested donation of $5 to support Willow Bend’s environmental education programs in local schools. Tour packets will be available at Willow Bend the day of the tour.
