Supervisor Lena Fowler focuses on the Museum Fire

This past week, Supervisor Lena Fowler focused her attention on the Museum Fire that started on Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Flagstaff, AZ. Crews continue to engage the fire directly where it is safe to do so and use indirect tactics in areas of rugged terrain. There are islands of heavy fuels burning within the perimeter and smoke columns will be visible. Firefighters have contingency lines in place and now can get closer to the fire as they work to increase containment along the north and east perimeters.

Thunderstorms will again be present but are expected to drop minimal precipitation. Drying trends and increased temperatures are predicted into the weekend and bring the potential for increased fire activity. Structure preparation is complete in the communities nearest the fire and those areas will continue to be closely monitored.

Anyone interested in volunteering, please check in with United Way at the Museum Fire Volunteer Center! It is located in the Ponderosa Room at the Coconino County Health & Human Services Building on King Street (2625 N. King Street)! you can also give them a call at 928-773-9813 ext. 219! They are open everyday from 8AM to 7PM.

Supervisor Lena Fowler attended fire briefing and press conference with Governor Doug Ducey on July 23, held at the Southwest Area Type 1 Management Team 2 Headquaters at Fort Tuthill. Governor Ducey has signed a declaration of emergency at the press conference and stated, putting out this fire is the State of Arizona’s #1 priority.

Supervisor Lena Fowler assisted volunteers at the sandbag stations and volunteer educational center. The team in the photo are from the Winslow prison fire crew and Coconino County Public Works.

When smoke levels are high, the appropriate protective measures should be followed.

Coconino County Health and Human Services recommends the following ways for individuals to protect
themselves:

Avoid breathing smoke if you can help it. If you are healthy, then you usually are not at a major risk from smoke. People at risk include those with heart or lung diseases, children and older adults.
Use visibility guides. Because smoke is highly visible, it is possible to visually estimate smoke levels and estimate potential health impacts. Generally, the worse the visibility is, the worse the smoke is.
Use common sense. If it looks smoky outside, then it is probably not a good time for outdoor activities. And it’s probably not a good time for your children to play outdoors.
Pay attention to local air quality reports. Stay alert to any news coverage or health warnings related to smoke. In the event of dangerous smoke levels, the Local Health and Emergency Authorities will issue instructions based on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index(AQI).
If you are advised to stay indoors, keep your windows and doors closed. Make sure air conditioning units have a clean filter in the air intakes. Devices with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters can reduce the indoor pollution.
Do not add to indoor air pollution. Don’t use anything that burns, such as wood fireplaces, gas logs, gas stoves, or even candles.

Grand Canyon National Park Suppressing Three Fires on North Rim

Grand Canyon, AZ – Recent monsoonal activity in the region resulted in several new lightning ignited fires on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park over the past several days. Fire crews are actively working to suppress three fires within Grand Canyon National Park.

The Lindbergh Fire near Lindbergh Hill is being directly suppressed. Approximately 2 acres in size, current fire behavior is creeping and smoldering within mixed conifer. Fire crews are working to contain the fire at the smallest possible size by digging handline around the fire’s perimeter.

Fire crews have contained the Lancelot Fire, near Lancelot Point. It is currently estimated to be .25 acres and smoldering and creeping in ponderosa pine forest.

The Shinumo Fire, located north of the Shinumo Amphitheater, has also been contained at .10 acres.

The Ikes Fire was detected on July 25th and is located 3 miles east of Swamp Point. It is approximately 1.5 acres in size and burning in mixed conifer with a grass understory. Fire managers plan to confine and contain the Ikes Fire to a defined planning area while providing for point protection of identified sensitive natural and cultural resources.

The Dutton Fire was also detected on July 25th and is located on the northeastern edge of the Powell Plateau. It is burning in ponderosa pine and brush. Fire managers plan to monitor the Dutton Fire.

At this time there are no road closures. However individuals driving out to Swamp or Fire Point should be aware of fire crews working in the vicinity. Motorists should turn on their headlights and slow down for emergency response vehicles.

Grand Canyon National Park is receiving interagency support from local resources from the North one Interagency Fire Management Organization.

Each fire start is evaluated by fire management officials for the most appropriate management strategy. Firefighter safety, resources at risk, location of the fire, available resources, regional and national preparedness levels, and weather forecast are taken into consideration when responding to a wildfire ignition.
