We’ve all survived the fire and realized again how much we have to be thankful for – this beautiful land, those dedicated fire fighters, the just-in-time beginning of the monsoon rains. MNA is extending an invite to all the fire crews to come celebrate the quenching of the fire with a bit of thirst quenching at Thirsty Thursdays. Come join the celebration and show your appreciation. Then join us next weekend for the Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture where the Jones Benally Family will be performing and the collections teams have selected rarely seen Navajo items to display at the Easton Collection Center from noon to 2 pm.

70th Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture
August 3 & 4, 9 am – 5 pm

More than 80 Navajo artists will be demonstrating and selling their works at this award-winning festival. Enjoy performances by the Jones Benally Family, JJ Ortero, and Radmilla Cody. Behind the Scenes Tour: Archaeology

Tour MNA’s legacy Archaeology Collection, which includes rare artifacts ranging from sandals to painted baskets and prehistoric murals to 1000 year old pottery. Find out what researchers look for in potsherds and hear about recent findings that continue to inspire dialogue. Limited to 10 people. Advance tickets required.

As part of our 90th year celebrations, this exhibition highlights nine young to midcareer artists who are doing interesting, exploratory work in sculpture, printmaking, fashion design, silverwork, landscape painting, and mixed media. The featured artists will be Melissa Cody, Arlo Namingha, Michael Namingha, Melanie Yazzie, Orlando Dugi, Jason Garcia, Delwyn Tawvaya, Josh Elliott, and Michelle Condrat.

DesertArtLAB: Ecologies of Resistance

The DesertArtLAB interdisciplinary art collaborative transformed a tract of blighted land into a thriving dryland ecosystem with native plants and Native voices. This exhibition illustrates the process through the use of artifacts, archival materials, botanical samples, and a cell phone audio component. Bring your own headphones for the best experience.

Support fire mitigation
Though the recent “Museum Fire” luckily wasn’t actually at the museum, it was a stark reminder of why our facilities team is constantly trying to clear out debris and other potential fuel for fires. With 200 acres of land, much of it forested, and 40 buildings, many of them historic wood structures, we must be constantly vigilant. Help support the efforts to keep MNA property safeguarded against fire by making a donation and specifying “fire” in the notes.
