Coconino Community College: Education that works for you.
A quick word from the President
“Diverse” is a powerful word to describe our students. They hail from all backgrounds, cultures, ages and more.
As a result, Coconino Community College will always remain committed to celebrating the diversity and inclusion of all our students across our 18,600-square-mile county, and, to that end, CCC’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee has the purpose of not only “talking the talk” but “walking the walk” of supporting and taking action in that commitment.
According to our Diversity Statement, “Coconino Community College recognizes and respects diversity and the value it brings to our communities. We appreciate and welcome cultures, identities, beliefs, experiences and all that makes us unique. CCC champions and takes action to build an inclusive work and learning environment. We are allies and advocates, navigating respectful dialogue about our shared humanity.”
I invite you to explore our Diversity page on our website here.

CCC Fine Arts faculty display their own work to help inspire students
Coconino Community College student Daniel Wendt decided to put his art-appreciation skills to the test.
He’s in a course on art appreciation, and his instructor suggested critiquing actual pieces of art to determine their impact on him. So, he decided to check out the Faculty Art Exhibit in the Lone Tree Campus Commons during the opening reception on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Members of the public, CCC students, faculty and staff attended the reception to meet and chat with the faculty artists.
“It’s a great exercise for me – to hone my skills a little bit and see the art for what it is,” Wendt said.
The exhibit showcases the work of CCC’s Fine Arts Department faculty, including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics and more.
Two CCC students receive All-Arizona nod
Two Coconino Community College students have been recognized for the prestigious 2019 All-Arizona Academic Team Scholarship. The scholarship provides free tuition for 60 credit hours at the recipient’s choice of one of the three Arizona state universities.
John Byrd and Martika Tallman received the honor from CCC.
“It’s the chance to actually obtain that education, to be able to achieve my dreams,” John Byrd said. “Without this kind of help, I honestly don’t think I would have been able to get a bachelor’s degree. It’s life changing.”
Byrd’s ultimate goal is to work in the mechanical engineering sector with biological devices, and depending on the needs of the industry, he may continue his education and seek a master’s degree or Ph.D.
Student Martika Tallman said she plans on becoming a dental hygienist working on the Navajo Nation, and she added she is thrilled with being selected for the All-Arizona Academic Team.
Tallman said, “It will help me out with the cost to go to school at NAU, because the Dental Hygiene program is one of the most expensive programs.”

CCC Curios magazine launches improved website
CCC English Faculty Sandra Dihlmann helps COM181 students develop the Curios and OnCourse magazines each year.
Online presence dedicated to connection, education
Coconino Community College students, after discovering a need for a literary magazine to serve northern Arizona writers, created Curios magazine in 2006 to reflect the diverse voices in Coconino County.
“We made attempts throughout the years to create and maintain an online presence on the College’s website to provide a place for non-print submissions,” said Sandra Dihlmann, English faculty who teaches the COM181 Student Publications class.
A new and improved Curios Living Magazine website was imagined, and it has launched.
“On this website, we showcase a digital copy of the current magazine; provide links to archived copies of past magazines; offer a space for local performance art; … include interviews with selected authors in the form of Tiki Talks that could be used as primary sources for lesson plans associated with published works in Curios; and offer educational resources …”
CCC holds Mini Job Fair for CAMT students
CCC CAMT alum Elisha Kerley now works at The Hub and helps new recruits through the application process.
After training, jobs are key for newly certified apartment maintenance techs
Students in the Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician Program were treated to a mini Job Fair at the Lone Tree campus Friday, March 1.
Ken Myers, CCC Construction Technology Management faculty, said the purpose of the job fair for the students was “to get them employment.” The CAMT program, currently underway, offers training and certification in a variety of areas associated with maintaining properties – whether they be apartment complexes or hotels or other commercial property.
“I like the work,” said a smiling Elisha Kerley, Hub Maintenance Technician, who completed the CCC CAMT program in 2017. “It’s challenging. I’m learning more things and I’m moving forward and upward.”
Present at the Mini Job Fair were The Hub, Little America Hotel, Bella Investments, City of Flagstaff, Shelton Cook Real Estate Services, Southwest Hospitality Management and Performance Staffing.
Learn American Sign Language (ASL) at CCC
The course of study is designed to give students a foundation in working with the Deaf community
Helen Keller once said, “Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people.”
Let the hands do the talking to make the connection. Coconino Community College offers degrees and certificates in American Sign Language.
Sarah Benton, CCC’s ASL program coordinator, said that Sign Language is the third most common language.
“Reardless of your career, having the knowledge of sign language in the community is more marketable and useful,” Benton said, adding that ASL proficiency is especially beneficial to education and speech pathology majors.
Why should people consider taking ASL?
“Deaf people are a part of our community and are a part of who we are,” Benton said. “It is important to communicate with and understand this part of the population.”
ASL student Geoff Smith said, “I learned not only a language, but also different viewpoints and perspectives of the Deaf culture and community.”
Many students at CCC take American Sign Language to satisfy their language requirements for degree completion.
