Sedona’s Deep Connection to Modern Art
February 22 / 4 to 5pm

Free Talk Presented by Mark Rownd
Sedona holds a significant but little known place in the history of the modern art movement in America during the 20th century. During the 1940’s and 50’s key figures who influenced the formation of the modern art movement in New York traveled to Sedona to live and create art here.  Much of the art created in Sedona during that time period now resides in museums around the U.S and the world, and is still actively being showcased in important historical exhibitions to this day, including an exhibit currently on view at the Tate museum in London, and an exhibition last year at the Museum of Modern Art in NY.

Come learn more about this history of this time period, and see examples of original artworks by Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning, Jimmy Ernst, Leonora Carrington, and others during this hour long presentation by Marc Rownd. The presentation will include a digital slide show and talk and showcase of original works – including a special find Mark discovered locally.

Talk & Presentation
April 4, 7–8:30pm

With Stuart Shils
This talk and digital presentation is free and open to the public but is also the first session of the Stuart Shils course “Emphasizing Abstraction” Stuart reminds us that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting and two-dimensional artwork. As Maurice Denis said at the beginning of the 20th century:
‘Remember: a picture before being a battle-horse, a nude woman or some anecdote is essentially a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order.’
Stuart Shils Workshop at Sedona Arts Center
Emphasizing Abstraction
April 5–7The workshop kicks off with a digital presentation on April 4 at 7pm. next, the focus will be on interpreting visual history, examining forms of abstraction in painting, and drawing by the way of our own responses graphically.

About Stuart Shils
Stuart Shils is a sensitive painter of the abstract, as seen through the composition in his urban work, and the dramatic weather depicted in his Irish coastal work. His Italian series seems to be bathed in warm-to-hot sunlight. An ever-evolving artist, his recent explorations have taken an even more abstract turn involving collage and assemblage. Inspired by work done on his monotype press, his paintings became abstract fields of beautiful hues, and textures with small accents of surprise that punctuate and shape the broad environments of color. Even more recently, his photography of collages in the making and ever changing street scenes reveal an alert eye that constantly sees the shifting compositions of daily life, revealing just how they can be re-contextualized by the artistic eye.
