FLAGSTAFF — Students like Lacey Bienz flocked to the Clubs and Organizations Fair Wednesday, Jan. 23, held every semester at Coconino Community College.
The fair helps students connect to their interests with 13 different groups. Among the Clubs and Organizations represented were: Games, Anthropology, Science, Anime, Outdoor, Chess, Student Body, Associated Latino American Students, and the Native American Student Association.
Derik Yellowhair, Student Life Coordinator at CCC, said, “Events like the Clubs and Organizations Fair is important for students to feel a sense of belonging and to connect to the faculty and staff members.”
Bienz is a first-generation student who came across TRiO at a previous Clubs and Organizations Fair. Through this program, Bienz was able to get the resources she needed to feel at home.
According to TRiO, they provide services to enhance learning, assist in financial arrangements, and to help guide students to success by offering academic advising, mentoring, tutoring, advanced study skills, transfer assistance, and application assistance for financial aid or scholarships. To qualify, TRiO accepts low income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.
“TRiO helped make college less intimidating,” Bienz said, adding that CCC’s small class sizes help her feel she can make a difference.
Bienz said she recommends the TRiO program to all students who qualify, especially first-generation students, as it is a major support system and crucial for developmental understanding of college.
