Sept. 29 — 2018 Sustainable Building Tour in Flagstaff

The self-guided tour is from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, 703 E. Sawmill Rd.

The Coconino County Sustainable Building Program, in partnership with the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program and Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, will host the 2018 Sustainable Building Tour as part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science and the American Solar Energy Society’s National Tour.

The tour is free, with a suggested donation of $5 to support Willow Bend’s environmental education programs in local schools. Tour packets will be available at Willow Bend the day of the tour or can be downloaded by going to www.coconino.az.gov/2049/2018-Sustainable-Building-Tour.

This year’s tour features 14 homes displaying a variety of sustainable building measures such as real-time energy monitoring, fully off-grid systems, historic preservation, LEED residential certification, fire resistance and other sustainable features. The homes were constructed using alternative, recycled, conventional and regional materials like local wood, rammed earth, cinder block and insulated concrete forms. Additional sustainability features include solar thermal (hot-water) for domestic and space heating, solar photovoltaic, passive solar design, Xeriscaping, net-zero water and energy consumption, greywater and rainwater systems and retrofits for energy efficiency and improved indoor air quality.

The annual self-guided tour attracts more than 200 people from throughout Coconino County and the state. It provides attendees with perspectives from homeowners, builders and designers about the living practices, costs, methods, and economic and environmental benefits of building sustainably.
