National Emergency Test

Thursday morning you’ll get a couple strange messages. First on your cell phone and then two minutes later on whatever radio or TV station you’re using. It’s the yearly national test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA).  These are the systems designed to keep you informed about local, state, regional and national emergencies, such as fire, toxic chemical spill or worse. You probably hear some of our weekly and monthly tests of the system. The national tests will take place at about 11:20 am Thursday.

You might be interested to know that because of the number of stations and the wide reach of Arizona Public Radio funded by your membership dollars, state authorities have designated KNAU as the “local primary” or LP-1 station.  This means that all area stations must monitor KNAU, which is another reason we test the system on a regular basis

In hot dry climates, urban trees can reduce the intensity of sunlight, block infrared heat exchange-and act as natural evaporative coolers.  Having shade trees to the center or east of a building’s southern façade can cool it by several degrees. Learn more at KNAU.org.
Brain Food: Accent Bias and Communication

According to linguists, we all have accents, and we all carry biases about each others’ accents. Okim Kang, a researcher at Northern Arizona University, is studying the judgements we make about how difficult a person may be to understand before he or she even says a word.  Learn more at KNAU.org.

US Justice Department Seeks Dismissal From Tribe’s Lawsuit

Attorneys for the U.S. Justice Department want a federal judge to drop a lawsuit that faulted the office for not prosecuting an Arizona police officer in a Navajo woman’s death.  Learn more at KNAU.org.

Scientists Debate Mexican Gray Wolf’s Reintroduction Area
Some ecologists and activists argue the endangered Mexican gray wolf should be reintroduced further north in Arizona to increase the population. But a new study coauthored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department says expanding the range would harm recovery efforts. Learn more at KNAU.org.
