September 17–19
Loosen Up with Aquamedia Painting

Burridge’s new three-day format brings his most popular workshops into a new focus. “Loosen Up” workshops nurture individual success and personal enrichment with a big emphasis on daily painting projects at your own pace. It is stress-free, but be warned; you could end up with too much enthusiasm for painting. This Burridge flagship workshop offers a variety of painting subjects for everyone. Designed for the professional painter who is stuck in a style as well as for the novice who wants to conquer their fear of painting.

September 21–23
Abstract / Figurative 3-Day Workshop

This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. You will learn expressive painting techniques for the modern painter. If you ever wanted to learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure, this workshop is for you. Color is explained and explored. You will learn the 12 Design Compositions for a successful painting. Your “drawing the nude” skills are not a prerequisite.
October 1–3
Wax, Paper, Scissors
Crystal Neubauer

Delve into the art of paper and glue, working through an intensive exploration of the art of abstract collage, intended to help you connect to the design knowledge you already carry within you to create satisfying works of art while discovering your own authentic style.

Create compositions utilizing both, elements with organic torn edges, and those deliberately cut with scissors. Learn to select the proper adhesive, determine what substrate to utilize, and alter a variety of salvaged materials for use in collage. You will also learn the unique nature and differences found between hot encaustic wax and cold wax mediums when applied to the paper elements and incorporated into the design.

October 6 & 7
The Magic of Paperclay Sculpture
Michele Collier

Learn to explore the expressive beauty of the human form through a unique paperclay process working from slab to sculptural form. For sculptors with experience this is a game changer, for those with no experience it is a wonderful place to begin. No knowledge of anatomy, sculpture or ceramics is needed to fully engage with this workshop.

We will break some rules and also learn some new ones as you delve into this modern, user-friendly medium. Surface treatment will be discussed and recipe sheets for the stains and oxides will be provided. Each student will end with two works of about 12 inches in height or length.

October 10 – 12
Responding to Nature
Suzie Baker

The workshop will kick off with a lecture and demo. Students receive instruction on principles of painting ranging from drawing, color, value, composition, color theory and so much more. Every day, you will apply what is being taught by getting outside to paint, observing and recording nature as it changes. Suzie will demo on location and offer one-on-one instruction in the field at every student’s easel.

Suzie’s goal is to help each student with strategies for personal progression through group instruction, example, and individual interaction. Her humorous, informative manner makes tackling this multi-faceted challenge a fun and rewarding experience.

October 21 & 22
Creative Travel Journals
Stan Fellows

This is a joyful, two-day workshop for curious, adventuresome artists and non-artists to learn the skill of unhurried observation. Doodling a map for someone, you go for clarity, not art, right? Slow drawing works in a similar way: It quiets the mind and lets experience saturate us. A chance to relish rather than rush and put any art ideas aside. The goal will not be finished products. There won’t be sharing of journals or critiques. But you will discover practical, everyday tips on how to observe more than you ever imagined possible – all through non-art drawing. You need no artistic skill or even a passing interest in art. We may dabble in watercolor but only in a day-dreamy manner as a fun way of decorating pages.

October 22 – 26
Sedona Fall Colors
Betty Carr

Work in watercolor or oil!

In this five-day workshop learn to capture the beauty of light! Betty Carr teaches students to accurately portray the effect of light on any subject in watercolor or oil.

Betty Carr’s energetic style and enthusiasm for painting and teaching create an infectious atmosphere of adventure and “can do” among her students. During her workshop Betty begins each day with a demonstration/ lecture covering tools, techniques, brushwork, problems and solutions. Emphasis throughout the workshop is on organization and simplification of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, movement and mass to create a dynamic, coherent composition.

October 25 – 28
Source to Studio Workshop
Joshua BeenIn this workshop, through clearly explaining concepts in the translation process from a three dimensional environment to a two dimensional surface, I will clear up the mystery, and strengthen your knowledge of the process and visual language of painting, from the source (plein air) to the studio. I teach a 4 pronged visual language approach (Value, Shapes, Edges, and Texture) that is both easy to remember and an effective way of breaking down difficult subject matter into manageable information.

This workshop meets for 3.5 days. The final day is a complete demonstration of taking a plein air painting done from life and building a larger and more detailed composition in the studio setting.

Community Plein Air Event at L’Auberge de Sedona

Art Curator at L’Auberge de Sedona and owner of Goldenstein Gallery, Linda Goldenstein, invites the community to participate in completing plein air paintings or drawings in any medium, along the banks of Oak Creek at L’Auberge de Sedona. Artists will set up along the L’Auberge creekside and in addition to the creek, rocks, trees, ducks, etc., a live model* will be posing, as well! Artists can begin working upon arrival and stop at 11am. Finished works may be displayed on the creekside lawns using artist’s own easel and they may be for sale. The Arts Center will present an award at 11:15am and will process any sales from 11-11:30am.

As parking is very limited at the resort, Red Rock Magic Trolley will be shuttling artists and the public from the Sedona Arts Center lower parking lot to nearby L’Auberge resort, back and forth from 8am to 1pm, leaving plenty of time after the event for lunch at Cress on Oak Creek, the lovely creekside restaurant at L’Auberge.
