FLAGSTAFF — Joe Cornett, a photography teacher at Flagstaff High School, was honored as the 2018 Coconino County Teacher of the Year.
He will receive a new car leased for one year from Findlay Toyota Flagstaff, a $2,000 award and a chance to apply for Arizona Teacher of the Year.
Runner ups, or Ambassadors of Excellence, are:
Kelley Smith from Coconino High School and Louise Durant from Williams Elementary Middle School, who each will received a $1,500 cash award and a chance to apply for Arizona Teacher of the Year.
Catherine Kowalski, a teacher and coach at Williams High School, was named the inaugural Rookie Teacher of the Year, who received a $1,000 cash award.
Alexa Frechette (Mount Elden Middle School) and Heather Horner (Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School-Elementary) are this year’s Rookie Teachers of the Year Ambassadors, who will receive a $500 cash prize.
The sixth annual Coconino County Teacher of the Year Awards event was held April 18 at the High Country Conference Center, presented by the Coconino County Education Service Agency Innovation & Development Division.

The Teacher of the Year event is a county-wide teacher recognition program that spotlights the contributions of state-accredited teachers of Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade. This year a total of 28 teachers were nominated. The Teacher of the Year, and the runners up, or the Ambassadors for Excellence, are recognized and announced at the awards event. The event is made possible through sponsorships from businesses and community members.
