FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff’s City Council adopted Resolution 2018-06 at their meeting on Jan. 30, 2018 reaffirming support for the 2012 Public Land Order No. 7787 to withdraw 1,006,545 acres of federal lands surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park from new uranium mining for 20 years.
“The Flagstaff City Council reaffirmed its support for the withdraw of these important public lands from consideration for future uranium mining,” said Mayor Coral Evans. “This issue remains as important as it was when we first considered it in 2010.”
In Oct. 2017, the Trump Administration recommended lifting the moratorium on new uranium claims in the Grand Canyon region and allowing uranium mining to occur.
A truly historic partnership has been created between the Havasupai Tribal Council and Flagstaff City Council,” said Havasupai Tribal Councilmember Ophelia Watahomigie-Corliss. “We appreciate the Council passing this Resolution in support of Public Lands. Together we are ensuring the safety of the Grand Canyon region for the future of all people and for generations to come. “
Flagstaff City Council and the Havasupai Tribal Council committed to oppose any efforts to rescind or weaken the withdrawal before its expiration.
