Scott Conary
The Story in the Still Life
April 13 – 15, 2018

We tell a story by what subject we choose to paint, how we present that subject, and how we paint it. Finding what interests us in a subject and how we connect to it drives that story, and directs how the painting is made. We’ll work on small still life paintings to explore the process – from thumbnail sketches, lighting the subject, considerations of composition, to the application of paint to build form with light, color and mark.

Colored Pencil Adventure
January 6 – 7, 2018  or  February 3 – 4, 2018

Explore the the secrets of creating high performance art with Prismacolor fine art pencils. Award winning artist and illustrator Richard Drayton will guide students through step-by-step techniques that will result in rich blended colors and powerful composition. Printed worksheets and images will be provided by the instructor. Artists of all levels will enjoy expanding the boundaries of creative expression with this remarkably versatile medium.

Kathryn Stats
Plein Air Painting in the Studio
May 10 – 13, 2018 

Kathryn Stats is known for her vibrant color, dramatic compositions and subtle brushwork. In this studio workshop students will have the opportunity to choose whether they wish to work on landscape composition from photo-reference or with a still-life/floral from life or both! Students will benefit from demonstrations, slide show and lecture, and one-on-one assistance with their paintings.

Elizabeth St. Hilaire
Paper Painting – Amazing Animals
April 20 – 22, 2018

Elizabeth will guide you through working on a mixed media collage portrait of man’s best friend – not limited to dogs or cats! Plan to work on whatever “pet” makes you happy, birds, fish, ferrets included! You will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings.

Stuart Shils 
Emphasizing Abstraction
April 27 – 29, 2018

Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images and on the final day we apply what we have learned to drawing outdoors.

Jody Florman
Vivid Florals in Oil
May 7 – 11, 2018

Using the Old Masters technique of glazing layers of paint to build up luminous we’ll work step-by-step creating an image of a rose on a provided gessoed board. Through creating a “Value Painting” the student will have a deeper grounding in painting skills, color mixing, brush work and evolving the painting as a whole composition. Jody will use creative tools to help see color in a new way and provide individual guidance throughout each day of the workshop.

Abstract / Figurative Workshop
May 14 – 18, 2018

This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. Two days with the model and plenty of time to experiment with a master. If you ever wanted to learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure, this workshop is for you. Classes will include a lot of paint sketching, gestural drawing and finger painting techniques. Evolving a brand new approach to creating finished paintings.

The Power of Landscape
April 16 – 18, 2018 

Our focus is on creating a beautiful and powerful landscape, learning about principles of composition through an exciting process that starts with the idea and gradually unfolds into a work of art. Using landscape photo references we will play with the colors and the brushstrokes and discover, what helps to create coherent painting and what makes it stand out. Emphasis will be on composition and dramatic color.

Wax, Paper, Scissors
October 1 – 3, 2018

Delve into the art of paper, glue and wax working through an intensive exploration of the art of abstract collage. Learn to create satisfying works of art while discovering your own authentic style. We’ll use elements with organic torn edges, and cut edges, select the proper adhesive, determine what substrate to utilize, and alter a variety of salvaged materials for use in collage.
