There are many things that tie communities together. They can be the strings of family, friendship, or even just common interests between neighbors. Like the first domino falling that starts the cascade, people in a community are connected and influenced by each other in an almost interdependent relationship.

Within every member of a community lies a vision of how they want to see their future; when united with the voices of their neighbors, a pebble can turn into a formidable mountain. Neighborhood associations provide a medium to gather local concerns and formulate appropriate responses based on shared views. Although it is not a governmental entity, a neighborhood association can spearhead projects and work as a liaison between the citizens it represents and the city they live in.

Among Northern Arizona’s many great neighborhood associations, Plaza Vieja and Southside are two of the most outstanding. Their efforts to provide environments that continuously improve residents’ quality of life makes them invaluable to the people they serve. Furthermore, their determination to establish an inclusive community encourages positive growth and promotes a flourishing atmosphere.

Like many neighborhoods in Flagstaff, Plaza Vieja is proud of its heritage and culture. Therefore, it tries to retain a firm grasp on its roots while also keeping an eye on the future. The Plaza Vieja Neighborhood Association is highly involved in its community and responds to the needs of its elderly population by organizing community-assisted home   clean-ups and painting. Meanwhile, for its younger population, Plaza Vieja intends to set up tutoring programs for any kids who require extra assistance with schoolwork.

Likewise, the Southside Neighborhood Association is distinguished by the diverse population it serves and its dedication to providing its community with the resources it requires to thrive. One of the Southside Neighborhood Association’s greatest tools is the Murdoch Community Center. The community center is a multipurpose building that provides the Southside neighborhood with a place to have a free computer lab, study area and affordable event center. Additionally, its flexible nature allows it to be used from anything such as a meeting room to a voter registration area.

Communities are made of people who rely on each other to prosper and their interconnected nature means that organizations like neighborhood associations are required to organize their voices and create comprehensive solutions to concerns.

Our local neighborhood associations are doing their best but they are only as strong as the volunteers behind them. If interested in getting involved with improving the local community, volunteering is among one of the best services one can provide.

Indeed, both the Southside and Plaza Vieja neighborhood Aassociations encourage anyone to attend their meetings and volunteer at their events.

The Southside Neighborhood Association meets every third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Murdoch Community Center, 203 E. Brannen Ave., Flagstaff, AZ 86001.

The Plaza Vieja Neighborhood Association meets every second Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at 347 S. Malpais Lane, Suite 3, Flagstaff, AZ, 86001.

Grupos de comunidad fortalecen su área

Hay muchas cosas que unen comunidades. Pueden ser los enlaces de familia, amigos, o hasta intereses comunes. Como el primer domino que se cae y empieza la cascada de los demás, gente en una comunidad están conectados e influencian uno al otro en una manera casi interdependiente.

Dentro de cada miembro de la comunidad hay una visión del futuro; cuando unido con las voces de sus vecinos, una piedra se puede transformar en una montaña gigantesca. Asociaciones de vecindad ofrecen un medio donde problemas locales pueden ser agrupados y soluciones apropiadas pueden ser establecidas basadas en valores comunes. Asimismo, aunque no es una entidad gubernamental, una  asociación de vecindad puede ser un instrumento que guía proyectos entre los ciudadanos que representa y la ciudad en cuyo viven.

Entre todas de las asociaciones de vecindad en Flagstaff, Plaza Vieja y Southside son unas de las más excepcionales. Sus esfuerzos para promover un ambiente que continuamente mejora la calidad de vida de sus residentes los hacen una entidad importante para la gente que ayudan. Es más, su determinación a establecer una comunidad inclusiva  fomenta crecimiento positivo y promueve un ambiente próspero.

Análogo a muchas vecindades en Flagstaff, Plaza Vieja esta orgullosa de su historia y cultura. De hecho, la asociación intenta conmemorar sus raíces mientras mirar al futuro. Sin embargo, la asociación de vecindad de Plaza Vieja esta muy comprometida con su comunidad y atiende a su gente mayor al organizar voluntarios para ayudarlos mantener sus hogares. Conjuntamente, Plaza Vieja también esta tratando de iniciar un programa de consejo para niños que necesitan ayuda con tarea fuera de la escuela.

Igualmente, la asociación de vecindad de Southside también es destacada por su diversa populación y por su dedicación a equipar su comunidad con los recursos que necesita para prosperar. Uno de los instrumentos más importantes de Southside es el Murdoch Community Center. Este centro para la comunidad es de multiuso y presenta un lugar donde Southside puede tener un centro de computadoras gratuitas, lugar de estudio, y un económico lugar para rentar. Adicionalmente, su diseño flexible hace posible convertirlo de un lugar para juntas hasta un lugar para registrarse para votar.

Comunidades son compuestas de gente que dependen de uno al otro para florecer y este índole hace la asociaciones de vecindad importantes porque pueden crear soluciones comprensivas para problemas locales. Eso dicho, las asociaciones de vecindad hacen lo mejor que pueden pero sólo son tan fuertes como los voluntarios que los respaldan. Así, si están interesados en ayudar mejorar sus comunidades, siendo un voluntario es unas de las maneras mejores de asistir.

En efecto, las asociaciónes de vecindad de Plaza Vieja y Southside animan a cualquier persona interesada en saber más de sus organizaciones a asistir unas de sus conferencias o participar en sus eventos.

La asociación de vecindad de Plaza Vieja se junta el tercer jueves de cada mes a las 6 p.m. en el Murdoch Community Center, 203 E. Brannen Ave., Flagstaff, AZ 86001.

La asociación de vecindad de Southside se junta el segundo miércoles de cada mes a las 6 p.m. en 347 S. Malpais Lane, Suite 3, Flagstaff, AZ, 86001.
