FLAGSTAFF — Interested in joining a group of waste and recycling experts? Registration for the city’s Master Recycler course is now open will accept applications until Dec. 15, 2017.
The Master Recycler program began last year with a mission to train interested volunteers to promote sustainable behavior change in Flagstaff. After completing a six-week course featuring topics ranging from curbside recycling to preventing household food waste, 29 Master Recyclers began volunteering and spreading the message throughout the community. Since April, the Master Recyclers have collectively volunteered over 350 hours and conducted one-on-one conversations with over 4,500 Flagstaff residents.
These volunteers have shared their expertise at events like Earth Day and the Flagstaff Community Market, as well as delivered presentations at work and participated in door-to-door recycling outreach. Other examples of their work include creating digital content, such as the Flagstaff Green Minute videos by Amanda Kapp, which have been viewed by thousands on YouTube, Facebook and elsewhere. This work has allowed the city to reach a much larger audience with its education efforts.
The upcoming Master Recycler course will take place on Thursday nights, running from Feb. 1 to Mar. 22. According to Master Recycler, David Zimmerman, “I am pleased at how it has allowed me to meaningfully engage in the community, and the changes it inspired in me regarding my own ideas and behaviors about consumption and recycling.”
