FLAGSTAFF — The Jaime Major Golightly Historic Courtyard was aglow with the flickering of hundreds of candles during the opening night reception of the 2017 Celebraciones de la Gente.

The Día de los Muertos celebration was held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 at the Museum of Northern Arizona, presented in partnership with Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces.

Museum members had the opportunity to view nearly two-dozen altars during the opening reception.

The courtyard itself was also lit with a number candles, often illuminating crosses and grave markers.

The image would be shared with the general public on Saturday during second-annual evening presentation.

The opening night event also include a welcome by Carrie M. Heinonen, CEO & The Robert Breunig Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Christina Anaya, president of Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, along with information on upcoming events at the 14th annual celebration.

Museum members also had the opportunity view and purchase works by more than a half-dozen artists, along with participating in the annual silent auction to benefit Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces’ cultural programs.

Members of Mariachi Sol Azteca from Tucson provided entertainment in Branigar Hall and would be returning for performances on Saturday and Sunday.
