FLAGSTAFF — On Wednesday Oct. 25 at 6:30 pm in SBS West 200, Northern Arizona University, historian Andrés Reséndez from UC Davis, will be speak about his ground-breaking work, which traces the history of the enslavement and forced labor of indigenous peoples from early Spanish colonialism in the Caribbean, through the history of colonial New Spain and Mexico after independence, and in the U.S. Southwest up to the early twentieth century. He argues that forced labor, and not simply disease, was responsible for the loss of many millions of indigenous lives over this period, and that the trauma of that history still resonates today.
